Donker -- 1900 census - Monroe, Green WI District 124 - living with the family of Edwin and Eva Gran t - mother as house keeper, Helen as student 1910 census - 1st Ward Freeport with her mother Died in her sleep due to a stroke. During the hurricane of 1926, the family was in their car, in a metal building. The roof came down and a beam hit her on the head. At the time she was using her body as a shield to protect her daughter Catherine. Daughter Jeanne and husband John were in the front seat. There was no medical service available as all in the area had been lost during the storm. After arriving in IL, she had surgery and over a pint of blood was removed from her head but she was left with a clot. It is believed that clot made it's way to her brain, which caused the stroke. Donker Funeral Servies for the late Mrs. John E. Donker will be held at the home, 1538 South Oak Ave 9 o'clock Monday morning with a requiem mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church at 9:30 o'clock, Rt. Rev. C.F.Conley will be the celebrant of the mass and interment will be made in Calvary Cenetery. St Mary's Guild will meet to receive the rosary at the home 8 o'clock Sudnay night. Freeport Journal Standard, March 2, 1940 Members of the Vererans of Foreign Wars Auxillary meet Monday morning at 8 o'clock at the home of the late Mrs. John E. Donker, 1638 South Oak Ave and will attend the funeral services at St Mary's in a body. Freeport Journal Standard, March 4, 1940 Funeral services for the late Mrs. John E. Donker were held at the home at 1638 South Oak Ave at 9 o'clock this morning with a requiem mass at 9:30 o'clock, Rt.Rev. C.F. Conley celebrated the mass and interment was at Calvary Cemetery. |

Freeport Standard Journal First Lieutenant Donker Marries Untied Today to Miss Helen Howard of This City At 8 o'clock this morning, Miss Helen Howard and Lieut. John E. Donker were quietly married at St. Mary's Church, the Rev. T.F. Lydon officiating. The couple were attended my Miss Mildred Graham and Charles Michael. Mrs. Donker is the daughter of Mrs. M. Howard, State Street, and is a very popular young lady. She attended the schools of this city and since finishing her business course has been employed by the Guyer and Calkins wholesale grocers. Lieut. Donker is the son of Mrs. Gertrude Donker, Florence Station. He was formerly a member of Company L but for the last year has been training at the reserve officers training camp at Fort Sheridan where he was recently given the commission as second Lieutenant. He will leave for Hoboken N.J. probably later for France. After the ceremony Lieutenant Donker and Mrs. Donker left for an auto trip to Galesburg and other points. The many friends of the lieutenant and his wife wish them a happy and prosperous future. |
