A Lind Township farm that stands almost in a class by itself and is easily one of the most attractive in the rich and fertile district around Weyauwega, is the place of Mr. William Koplien. Mr. Koplien is of German birth, but has spent most of his years in Wisconsin, and he and his wife are people whose worth as homemakers and citizens entitle them to the recognition and esteem they have long enjoyed in Waupaca County. Mr. Koplien was born in Germany March 8, 1866, and was four years old when his parents, Gottlieb and Louisa (Mittelstadt) Koplien, emigrated to America, first settling in Milwaukee. After a residence of seven years in that city the family moved, in 1877, to Waupaca County, settling on a farm of eighty acres in Weyauwega Township. In 1880 Gottlieb Koplien bought 140 acres in Lind Township, and that was his home the rest of his years. Of the old homestead Mr. William Koplien now owns 100 acres, and his brother Albert has the other 40 acres. Gottlieb lived a long and useful life, was born December 262 1838, and died in Waupaca County September 3, 1916, at the age of seventy-eight. His widow, who was born May 10, 1838, is still living. He was a democrat in polities, and they were active members of the Lutheran Church in their community. Their children were: Adolph, deceased; William, Albert, Amelia, Emma and Edward, deceased. The family were living in Milwaukee when William Koplien reached the age when he could attend school, and after coming to Waupaca County he attended the Van Dewalker School, taught by Robert Taggart. Agriculture early became his choice of occupation, and while he had help from his parents at the beginning, few men have accomplished more and have a better farm and improvements to show for their years of industry. Mr. Koplien now owns 236 acres devoted to general farming and stock raising. He and his family reside in a comfortable home, and he has put many other improvements in the way of good buildings on the farm. Politically he is a republican. He is now serving as clerk of his home school board and was instrumental in getting the substantial new school building erected in 1911. He has served as township, supervisor two years and also as road overseer. His family are members of the Lutheran Church. On January 7, 1891, Mr. Koplien married Miss Dora Birkholz. She. was born in Saxville, Waushara County, Wisconsin, in 1875, a daughter of Fred and Lena (Bauer) Birkholz. Her parents were early settlers of Waushara County, but after some years sold their land there and are now living in Lind Township of Waupaca County. Much of the inspiration for the hard work Mr. and Mrs. Koplien have done in farming and home-making has come from their children. They have been ambitious for these children and have given them the best advantages both at home and in schools. Of the ten sons and daughters, all are living except one. Their names are: Alma, deceased; Walter, Edmond, Arnold, Louis, Laura, Alice, Clarence, Dorothy and Raymond. |
