1850 - Franklin, Montour, Pennsylvania The Emanuel Evangelical church is located on section 34, near the State line. This church was built in 1872. It is 64x32 feet in size, has a belfry but no bell, and cost, including furniture, $2,000. The trustees who superintended its erection were Henry Moyer, Frederich Arnsmier and G.W. Zimmerman. In 1884 the trustees were Henry Moyer, G.W. and Henry Zimmerman. The class leaders were G.W. Zimmerman and Henry Moyer. The services here are conducted in the German language. In 1853 George Washington Zimmerman (Quaker) moved to moved to Rock Run Twsp . Stephenson Cty IL along with his wife Elizabeth (Keller) and baby son Isaac and his brother Henry Zimmerman, Henry's wife Elizabeth (Krisher) and their daughter Emmilia. The first son (William) of George W and Elizabeth died the day after Isaac was born. George W followed his trade as a blacksmith for two years and then moved to Spring Grove Tws , WI, Green Co. He purchased 100 acres of land on sec. 33. There he built a home and a black smith shop. This property was located on the southwestcorner of the intersection of Cty Tk , G and Shanghai Rd. They lived there until 1862. He then built a home on Sec.28. Henry also settled in IL and later in on Sec. 27 Spring Grove Tws, WI, Green Co.. In the winter of 1862 George W returned to his old home in PN. In the spring of 1863 he returned to WI along with his father-in-law Chas.George Keller , mother-in-law and their 8 children. In the spring of 1869, George W and Henry's father Isaac W came to Spring Grove Tws, WI, Gree n Co. and settled on 90 acres of improved land in Sec 36 of Spring Grive Twsp. With Isaac W came the rest of his family, 1 son and 4 daughters. reports that George was in the WI 40th Reg are incorrect. George was not in the civil war however he was a member of the GAR as was his father. The chapter helped to raise money for a war memorial. Meetings were held at Mt Hope Church as well as family picnics where all vets and their wives could have their photo taken with a patriotic background. ----History of Green Co. 1884---- George W. Zimmerman was b in Columbia, PA, Feb 25, 1828. he was reared a farmer, but after becoming of age learned the blacksmith's trade, serving two and one half years apprenticeship. He followed that trade until 1863 or ten years after he commenced. He first came west in 1853, locating in Stephenson Co., Ill., where he worked at his trade a year and a half. In 1855 he came to the town of Spring Grove and bought 100 acres of land on sec 33, where he built a house and shop. This property he sold in 1862. The following winter he visited his old home in the east, returning in the spring of 1863, and the autumn of that year moved to his present residence on sec 28. This farm he had purchased the year previous (1862). He has in the farm 155 acres on sec 28, 20 acres on sec 27, and 60 acres on sec 20. He was married to Elizabeth Keller in PA, March 13, 1850. They have had eleven child. born to them -- William, b Jan 1852 d Sept 1853; Isaac b Aug 1853, who now lives in Oakley; Lloyd, b Feb 1856 d Jul 1859; Sarah Ann b Mar 1859 d Jul 1859; Owen b May 1860 and was married to Melinda Walter; Franklin b Feb 1863; Clinton b Aug 1865; Jacob b Mar 1868; Ida b Aug 1870 d Mar 1877; Elmer b Apr 1873; and Katie b Apr 1879. Mr. Zimmerman is a son of Isaac and Elizabeth Zimmerman. When George W. Zimmerman returned from the east, father Keller and family returned with him. There were eight children -- Lucy (deceased), Sarah, Franklin, Jacob, Phebe, Caroline, Rebecca, and Fanny. Frank was killed in the army; Fanny was married to Charles Mitchell; Caroline was married to J. P. Kildow; Rebecca was married to Isaac Clemans; Phebe was married to A. Spaulding, and Sarah was married to John Reahezen. Mr. Keller died in 1878. |
