1870 census - Spring Grove, Green WI1880 - Spring Grove, Green, WI sent by John & Sarah Reader to his half-brother David, postmarked Brodhead, Wisconsin:' 'March 8th 1874Spring Grove Green Co. WisconsinDear Brother and SisterI seat myself this evening to write you a few lines in answer to your kind and welcome letter of February 15 which we received this morning and which found us all well except myself I have not been well for the last two weeks I caught a very bad cold and it settled in my head and I have had the headache and been so giddy headed that I have not been able to do anything for two weeks but I feel better today again if it only holds out so for I expect that spring will soon be along for I saw two wild gooses this afternoon. We have had a very warm pleasant winter out here and not such a great deal of snow. We had about five weeks sleighing altogether this winter but the ground is all bare now and the frost is all out where it lays to the sun and the ground has begun to settle so that if the weather continues so we can soon commence to plow in high land. I am still on the old man Zimmermans farm yet the old man is healthier this winter than he has been since we are out here. But the old woman has been quite unhealthy all fall and winter she is failing very fast and I half think that she is getting the consumption the rest of the family are all well. Ben was here today and he can talk as well as ever, they have another young son he is about 8 months old and Kate is married and has a young daughter she is 9 months old and Lavinia has a daughter 6 months old and Sarah has a young daughter. She will be six months old the 16th of this month. We call her Esther Ellen, she is quite a girl already. She is a great pet for us in our old age. We will try and have her picture taken and sent to you in our next letter. Sarah said that she wanted you to be sure and send her them flower seed for she is a great hand for flowers an she would like to raise some nice flowers for her girl to play with and she wants you to tell her whether they are house flowers or not and how they are planted or sowed and if you ever have any notion of coming out here to see the country. I wish you would come next fall for I think there will be plenty of prairie chickens for there is any amount wintered over and then you can try your hand at shooting them. They are a pretty hard bird to shoot without you go with a team. Then you can drive midling close to them but they are a cunning animal to get up to on foot and hard to get the life out of.I must close by asking you to answer soon and fail not to give our love and best _______ to all that may ask after us.Yours respectfully J and S Reader |
