His great grandson, Leland Kimble Simons, Jr, recalls him showing off to his grandchildren ‎(m ales only)‎ that he could put a broom handle through the hole in his arm ‎(from his wound during the battle of Antietam)‎ Leland Simons, Sr. ‎(hisgreat grandson)‎ has the musket that John F. Epler carried during the battle ofAntietam, MD) HIST: Enlisted 10 Sep 1861 for three years in the U.S. service as a private in Capt. Cyrus STROUSE's Company K, 46th Regiment PA Volinteer Infantry. Recruited at Shamokin, PA and commanded by Col. Joseph F. KRIPE. Was assigned to the 'brig'division of the Gen. BANK's boys and participated in the following battles; Cedar Mountain, VA, 9 Aug 1862, Antietam, MD 17 Sep 1862. Upon the inaugriation of the Fredericksburg Campaign the 46th which then lying with the division at Fairfaxwas ordered forward but did not arrive upon the fieldin time to be engaged. He was wounded in the right arm at the battle ofAntietam, MD 17 Sep 1862. He contracted rhenmatism and his eyesight and hearing were effected. He wasconfined in the Hospital at Harpers Ferry and was mustered out of service and honorably discharged on the 3 Feb 1863. |
