Herbert F. Matzke, age 76, of Juda, died on Thursday, February 7, 2002 at his home. Herbie was born February 18, 1925, the son of Frank and Luella (Kolander) Matzke. He attended Juda School, graduating in 1942. He married Helen L. Schneider on December 23, 1944 at the United Methodist Church in Juda. Herbie operated the family honey bee business all his life until selling his bees in May of 2001 because of poor health. Herbie worked for Andereck Garage in Juda, DeKalb Seed Company, helped maintain Mount Vernon Cemetery, and worked for 39 years at the Swiss Colony until retiring in 1990. He was a member of the Zion United Methodist Church of Juda, a member of the Brodhead Country Club where he loved to golf, and the Brodhead Lions Club.
Herbie was very proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed bowling, bingo, fishing and since retiring he loved having coffee with the guys at the Juda Oasis. Herbie always had a smile and a joke and was known by many.
He is survived by his wife, Helen of Juda; a daughter, Janice (William Duchscher) Matzke; a son, James (Katherine) Matzke; four grandchildren: Lisa Lancaster, Amy (Robert) Parr, Erin Matzke, and Bradley Matzke, all of Monroe; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harold W. Matzke; and a sister in infancy.
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 11, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at the Zion United Methodist Church, Juda, with Rev. Thomas M. Miller officiating. Interment will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery in Juda. Friends may call on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, Monroe. A memorial fund will be established in Herbert's name.
