Bernhardt married Maria Eva Gebhardt in 1768 at Altalaha Lutheran Church, Rehrersburg, then Berks County, Pennsylvania. Eva's parents were Johann Georg Philip Gebhardt and Anna Margaret Massa. Eva's mother is buried at Altalaha Lutheran Cemetery in Rehrersburg. Johannes Wolphart's son, Christophel married Bernhardt's wife's sister Anna Margaret Gebhardt.
