From book Kopplin - Leo S. and Johanna Vera Lawson LDS microfilm XL1B7-102 #1607 Cat. # MRD-2#5 Leo S. and Johanna and children, Julius, Emma, Leo, Gustav, and Rudolph acame to America a few years after Henry did. Herman was a drummer boy in the German army and cound not come then. On June 12, 1868 Leo S. and Johanna purchased 80 acres of land from Joseph Steubreiter. This land is on Water Road, near the cemetery on Highway 73 Fall River Wisc. Rudolph Kopplin and Rosa Kopplin, his wife, bought the 80 acres in 1883, but owned it only one year and then sold it to Gustav, his brother. The agreement between Rudolph and Gustav reads as follows: The party of the second part covenants and agree for himself, his heirs and assigns to pay to the parties of the first part during their life or either of them an annuity as follows, to-wit: One dressed hog weighing about 250 lbs. 20 bu. of wheat, 20 bu. of potatoes, 100 lbs of salt, 2 lbs. of wool, 2 cords of soft and 2 cords of hard wood, and $12 in cash, all of this to be paid and delivered to the said parties of the first part on or before the first day of Dec each and every year; also 2 lbs of butter and 1 doz. eggs each and every week and 1 qt. of milk each day.(Uncle Wes said they only did it for a few years) On Aug 29,1874 Leo S. and Johanna sold this same parcel of land to Julius, their son. We don't know the exact price of this land but there was a mortgage of $1200 listed on Apr.16,1878. On Dec 12, 1882 they sold the land to Gottfried Hempel. In Feb 1883 Julius and Wilhelmina homesteaded in SD, not far hrom Hitchcock. At this time they had 5 children so had to endure many hardships. NOTE: We're told the Wisconsin Kopplin's had to send food, money, and clothing to SD to help the family survive the next few years. We belive those to be the Kopplin (Kopplien) of Center Twsp., Rock Cty WI and the relationship of Leo S and his brother August to those Kopplins, the SD Kopplin and the Green Cty Coplien (Kopplin) are not known. |
