Notes
![]() Note |
Notes for challanged records: There are no birth records to confirm that Winnie was the child of Nelson and Anna but rather could have been declared as a ward (guardianship). I have tons of records where the "parents" listed can be confirmed as guardians and not the birth parents, even some obits which state the guardian as the parents. I have also found another Nelson Layman and several Laymen with the middle name Nelson.... all living during a time when it was quite common for men to go by their middle name rather than their first. Since I have no proof of who her birth parents are, I am leaving my records as "challenged". Although she thought of Mary Fairman as her mother, it was actually Mary's son she lived with so it's possible he and his wife (they married about the same time a Mrs. Nelson Layman died in Langdale County Wisconsin) were actually the ones that took her in. Since she and Mary's son were close in age, it makes sense she would see Mary as the mother figure. My grandparents grew up with Winnie and to them she was Winnie Fairman. Since the first time the surname "Layman" was introduced by Winnie* was when one of her younger children was born, I have a feeling she had no idea she wasn't a Fairman or knew she wasn't but had no idea who her parents were. If Nelson was her father, it's possible she was mentioned in his will and it took a few years for her to be tracked down. *At the approx. age of 14, you do find her as Winnie Lehman on the census but that information would have been provided my Mary Fairman, not Winnie. By the following census she is an adult and lists herself as Winnie Fairman, a few years later she marries and again lists herself as Winnie Fairman and again when some of her children are born. It seems that later on, she and Frank (who submits the info for her death certificate and probably her obit) that she starts to use Layman as her maiden name (see RCROD birth records of children's birth) -- Per her death cert, her maiden name was Laymen (Daughter of Nelson and Mary) but per members of her family, and i her marriage cert, her maiden name was Fairman, which is what her brother-in-law also knew her as. In 1900, as an adult, she was using Fairman as her surname. summary: Her obituary states Layman as does her death certificate, on one of her children's birth certificates she lists her maiden name as Layman, on another of her children's birth certificates she lists Fairman, on her marriage record she lists "Fairman". Nelson and Anna may have been her guardians and not her birth parents. ------ BRODHEAD - Funeral services for Mrs. Frank Coplien, 65, who died Sunday in her home near Orfordville after a long illness, will be held at 1:30 p. rn. Wednesday in the Everson funeral home, Brodhead. The Rev. J. W. Zimmerman, retired Evangelical minister, will officiate, and burial will be in Mt. Vernon cemetery, Juda. The former Winifred Laymon was born in Shiocton and married Apr. 29, 1908 in Rockford, Ill. She was a resident of Juda until moving to Spring Valley township two years ago. Surviving are her husband; two sons, Earl, Juda, and Roger, Orfordville; a daughter, Mrs. Philip Rowley, Evansville, and 11 grandchildren |
