Cottage Grove Sentinel G. B. Hawkins, aged 83 years, died Saturday morning following an illness of five years. The funeral was held Monday, Rev. D. A. MacLeod officiating. G. B. Hawkins was born Jan. 27, 1832 in New York state. He crossed the plains in 1859 from St. Joe, Mo. to California, having several adventures with the Indians and enduring many hardships on the trip. Later he returned to Wisconsin and was married at National, Iowa, Nov. 9, 1867, to Mrs. Alcinda Johnson. They lived for six years on a farm near Broadhead, Wis., taking up a homestead later near Norton, Kans., where they resided 12 years. They moved to Oregon and settled here 24 years ago. The wife survives, also four of nine children. They are F. W. Hawkins of Newport, C. A. Hawkins of The Dalles, Mrs. W. G. Hauser of Eugene, Miss Daisy Hawkins of Salem. All were here to attend the funeral. Two children survive by a former marriage. They are Mrs. Sadie Comstock and Nelson E. Hawkins of Joplin, MO. Seven grandchildren and one great grandchild survive. |
