To WI in 1843 May have come west with his brother-in-law John Broughton Albany, Green County Wisconsin Vindicator, Thursday, September 24, 1891 Died-At his residence three miles southeast of Albany, on Saturday evening, Sept. 19, 1891, Mr. Stephen Leonard Eldred, aged 76 years, 1 month and 20 days. Stephen Eldred was born in Petersbury, NY, July 29, 1815. His younger days were spent in school and on a farm. He lived with his parents until November, 1836, when he was married to Roxanna Broughton, who preceded him to the better land June 30, 1887. He engaged in farming until 1843, when he came to Wisconsin and entered the land where he has resided continually ever since, with the exception of 7 years from 1867 to 1874, which he spent in Brodhead. In 1858 he united with the United Brethren Church and soon after commenced preaching, following that calling until 1874, when he retired from active work in the ministry. He leaves 7 children four sons and three daughters, besides many relatives and life long friends who will long mourn their loss. Funeral services were held in the Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. A.S. Kaye of Brodhead, assisted by the Rev. J.C. Carter, conducting them. The large attendance testified to the sterling worth of the deceased. Sympathy for the afflicted ones is felt by the entire community. --son Albany, Green County, Wisconsin Vindicator Thursday, March 7, 1895 Obituary Alonzo H. Eldred was born in the town of Albany on December 29, 1853 and died March 1, 1895, being a constant resident of the town with the exception of about 7 years residence in Brodhead, where his parents moved in 1867. He was united in marriage to Miss Fannie Atkinson on May 2, 1885. The deceased was noted for his honesty and uprightness; strictly temperate in all his habits. Although not a member of any religious denomination, the last few years he has lived an exemplary life. Stricken down in the prime of his manhood, he leaves a wife, three brothers and three sisters to mourn their loss. The funeral services were held at the house on Sunday, March 3 at 1:00 pm, conducted by the Rev. J.A. Willey and the remains taken to Brodhead for interment. Pg 1077: Biography of Peter L. Dedrick: "Peter L. Dedrick lived on the homestead purchased by his father, Nicholas Dedrick, in 1849. Nicholas Dedrick came from Ashford, Cattaraugus Co, NY with his wife and four children - Nicholas [Dedrick], Jr, John [Dedrick], Daniel [Dedrick] & Peter L. [Dedrick]. An older son, George [Dedrick], preceeded his parents in coming here." George Dedrick came to this town in 1842 and died in 1850 leaving a wife & 2 children. His widow afterwards married Nicholas Dedrick, Jr & they now [c1884] live in Eau Claire Co, WI. "A married daughter, Nancy, & her husband, Hiram Frank, came to this county in 1848. Mrs. Frank died in Pepin Co., 1881. Mr. Frank now [c1884] lives in Spring Grove. The oldest son, James H. Dedrick, came here in 1850" & now [c1884] lives in Taylor Co, WI. "John [Dedrick] lives [c1884] in Butler Co, Neb., and Daniel [Dedrick] in Spring Grove." Nicholas Dedrick, Sr, d. 10 Feb 1865 aged 70 yr. His wife, Nancy Dedrick, d. 5 May 1881, aged 78 yr. Peter L. Dedrick, m. 30 Sep 1869, Sarah L. Eldred, daughter of Stephen & Roxanna Eldred of Albany, Green Co, WI. Peter & Sarah Dedrick have 4 children: Leonard M. Dedrick, b. 3 Sep 1871; Leona L. Dedrick, b. 12 Dec 1873; Elmer P. Dedrick, b. 23 Aug 1877; Frank K. Dedrick, b. 9 Sep 1882. Peter L. Dedrick lives [c1884] in Spring Grove and was born in New York state. --granddaughter Mrs. Arthur E. Fleek, 64, died at 5:45 Friday evening, June 16, 1939, at her home in this village. She was in ill health for four years and since January 9, when she suffered a stroke she had been seriously ill. Lillian J. Eldred was born March 10, 1875, in Albany township, on the farm of her father, 1 1/2 mile east of here, and was the daughter of Stephen and Mary Douw-Eldred. Her father was the first white male child born in the town of Albany. She attended the Peebles school in her childhood, and later on, Albany high school, being graduated with the class here of 1893: She was married in Decatur, Illinois on July 18, 1905, to Arthur E. Fleek. They lived on his farm in the township of Decatur, four miles south of here, for four years, then they moved to the village of Albany. Mrs. Fleek was a charter member of the local woman's club, and was active in its work until her health failed. At one time she served as first vice president of the club, doing outstanding work in flower and gardening projects. During the long illness, she was a patient sufferer, never looking on the dark side, but always meeting her friends with a smile and cheerful greeting. Surviving are: her husband, a step-son, E. T. Fleek, an uncle, Henry Eldred, of Brodhead; a nephew, Louie Eldred, and a great nephew, Harold Eldred of Albany; a niece, Mrs. Francis Fisher of Alhambra, California, and many cousins and friends. The other members of her family - father-mother, one brother and one sister preceded her in death. Funeral services were conducted by T. E. Sharer, from the residence Monday at 2 pm. Rev. C H Pierstorff officiating. The song service was rendered by Rev. and Mrs. Pierstorff and the songs used were "In the Garden," and "The Old Rugged Cross," which had been requested by Mrs. Fleek. The pall bearers were Spence Bartlett, Chas Francis, Robert Smiley, Fred Morton, Arthur Partridge and Maurice Barton. Burial was in Hillcrest. |
