DAR records state she died in 1830 but she is still alive per the 1850 census. DAR as Pratt - other researchers as Mason. I believe that Pratt is correct and Mason was picked up from the name of Nathaniel's mother. David Mason did have a daughter named Thankful and she is who died in 1830. Census records show Thankful, the wife of Nathaniel Bancroft still alive in 1850 in Avon, Livingston, New York Since Adele lived with her mother Lucinda (granddaughter of Thankful) after her fathers’ death, I would assume that Lucinda knew the maiden name of her Grandmother. However the DAR requires proof and Adele joined the DAR. Census records of Harvey, son of Thankful, show his mother was born in MA, not CT. Perhaps the death record of Harvey lists the maiden name of his mother and that is where Adele Ludlow found it. Or her maiden name may be on the marriage cert. of his 2nd and 3rd marriage. Adele would have had access to his death record and at minimum, his 3rd marriage as the court house was a short walk from the Ludlow home in Monroe. She most likely filed to become a member after she and her mother moved to Janesville, Rock, Wisconsin which is only about 30 miles east of Monroe. Her DAR records should include what she gave as proof of her Great-Grandmother's maiden name. Withour proof, the DAR will generally only use a 1st name if that name can be shown on an official record such as a birth, death, marriage certificates, census records or headstone photo where only the first name is shown. |
