??1820 - Ward,Worcester,MA - 2 sons and wife 1830 - Richmond, Ontario, New York - 1 son, 2 daughters 1840 - Wethersfield, Genesee, New York with wife and 6 daughters Grove would be old enough to be on his own. 1848 - March 1 - son Grover files his land grant papers which means they prob. came to the area in the fall of 1847. Rock and Green saw an influx of people from that area of NY in 1846 and 1847. Harvey, per the DOB of Wm, may have come between 1840 and 1850. It appears his wife may have died in 1843, Rock, Wisconsin. 1850 - Johnstown, Rock, Wisconsin - ancestry.com and Babcock - dates of children, name of wife confirm this is Harvery Bancroft. This is the area (2N-14E) there the Knowlton family first settled. Known abolishionst from New York. By 1850, either one daughter has married of died. From: The Portrait and Biographical Album of Rock County, Wisconsin ©1889 p. 1013 Janes' Settlement, near Johnstown, in the town of Johnstown, derives its names from the settlement there, in 1842, of the JANES family. It at present consists of the residences of about a dozen families and a church, erected in 1861, by the Free Will Baptists, at a cost of about $2,000. (note, this is not Henry Janes of Janesville - it should be noted that the "Free Will Baptists" were abolishionists) 1860 - Jordan, Green, Wisconsin - with 2nd wife 1870 - Clarno, Green, Wisconsin with 3rd wife 1880 - Clarno, Green, Wisconsin - widower 1903 and 1918 maps shows an M.Bancroft living at Henry's land. 1920 - Monroe, Dist. 143, line 61, Appears his wife's name is Clara. "M" was born about 1895 and has 3 servants. George lives in next home down (line 62) with his wife Anna and son Kenneth. In 1910 Caroline is shown living here. In 1910 it was still district 125. This can be confirmed as the same land as the 1903 map shows her neighbor to be Gottlieb Ott and he is one line down from her on the census. William and George must be her nephews. George, William and their parents do not appear on the census for that district. I suspect the father of George and William is from Harvey's 2nd marriage and was sent to live with another family when their mother died. Whoever his father is, his father is prob. the missing son of Harvey. His middle initial is proably for his father. George Rudolph Benkert b. 19 Mar 1896 is the man living in the home in 1920. They have either changed the spelling of their name, they are sons of one of the daughters, or in fact not related. In 1905, brother Wm is living with Thomas Zimmerman in Mount Pleasant. In 1910, Wm is with his uncle and shows his father was born in Swtizerland. This confirms that the Benkert's bought the property from Caroline or her estate however the two maps show the name M.Bancroft, not Benkert. 4th marriage record found as Bancraft Janesville Gazette - Jan 13 1860 - letter on hold for past due postage, Sam Bancroft Newspaper: Weekly Gazette And Free Press Publication: 2 Nov 1860 - Janesville, Wisconsin Bancroft vs. Douglas [Lincoln Douglas] - a debate, does not give the first name of Mr. Bancroft. We find in The Janesville Gazette Publication: 8 Nov 1845 , that Mr. Bancroft is the Sec. of the Navy or The Janesville Gazette 14 Mar 1846 , he is a judge in the Wisconsin Territories. The debate was about slavery. Mr. Bancroft seems to side with Pres. Lincoln ideas. There were many abolishoninst in the area, most notably, James Knowlton, a judge and lawyer for Mary Todd Lincoln, his brother Wiram, a Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice, Wm. Tallman, business man and Joespeph Goodrich, Hotel Keeper. Tallman and Goodrich were also active in the undeground railway. The following article shows at least one of the CT Bancrofts was in fact a abolitionist. The circuit preachers and resldent ministers who have been located here, some for only a few months, and others for from one to three years, and one or more for five years, are as follows:--Reverends A. Bushnell. Daniel Coe, Levi Warner, J. Horton, Thomas Lodge, Lewis Gunn--Mr. Gunn was an ardent abolitionist, and by preaching strongly against the doctrine accepted by many Christian people of all denominations at that time, about 1844, that slavery was a divine institution, he offended some of the members of the church and congregation, and a considerable number of them withdrew for a time. Mr. Gunn was followed by T. C. Bancroft, Adee Vail, Theron Hollister. and in 1849-50 by Jonathan Robinson, during whose pastorate there were quite important revivals. He was followed by Isaac Lent, Abraham Davis, Mr. Jerrolds, W. E. Hill, J. Croft, David Lyman, son-in-law of Franklin Bramble, who was here some three years, Joseph Elliott, Ezra B. Pierce, who was here during the great revival in 1857 and '58 and assisted Dr. Eldridge at times in his church; Benjamin Wilson, George C. Ezra, W. E. Clark. Philip Germond. Thomas Elliott, Samuel R. Free, Charles Sagur, I. Harris, Joseph Millett, J. B. Cross, J. C. Van Arnum, J. C. Ferguson, who was here a part of the year 1884 and went out to China as a missionary; Virgil Blackman. J. H. Hoag, Wm. H. Vaughn. F. J. Somers, James Douglas, E. C. Powell, W. J. Barnes, Elbert H. Todd, who was here from 1895 to 1900. Rev. J. A. Hurn is the present pastor. Intervals, sometimes of two or three years, have occurred when there has been no preaching in the church. At other times the church has seemed quite strong and prosperous. History of Norfolk, Litchfield County, Connecticut, 1744-1900 The Methodist Episcopal Church If Harvey was an abolitionist, this may explain why he choose his wives. They all come from area's that were known to favor the end of slavery. If Harvey had also helped in the underground railway, chances are he had connections all over southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois. For widows and widowers to marry late in life was not uncommon back then. Men needed woman to take care of the children and care for them and woman need men for financial reasons. It wasn't easy for a widow to find a job unless she was a nurse of school teacher. In many Wisconsin counties, not only could teachers not be married, it was frowned upon to hire a female teacher with dependant children.
