James R. Apffel
WANTAGE — James Russell "Russ" Apffel, 87, died Tuesday, March 7, 2006. He was surrounded by family and loved ones when he passed away at home.
He and his wife, Henrietta, had resided in Wantage since they built their log cabin home in 1974.
Mr. Apffel served in the European Theater during World War II with U.S. the Army Medical Corps. His battalion fought in the Battle of Normandy. He was decorated with the American Theater Campaign Medal, the Eamet Campaign Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the Good Conduct Medal and a Victory Medal.
He came home from the Army and operated his own milk route. He was an optician, a trade he learned at 16 at his father's optical business in New York City. He retired in 1988. He was an avid vegetable gardener.
Mr. Apffel was a Boy Scout leader and a skilled fisherman for many years. He was honored for his 30 years of volunteer service to the Midland Park Ambulance Corps. He was a Brother of the Ridgewood Masonic Lodge, and was well known at the Blue Ridge Beagle Club for his many good deeds.
Mr. Apffel is survived by his wife of 65 years, Henrietta Gallant Apffel. He is cherished by his son Jim, daughter Joyce, twin daughters Cindy and Kate, and all their spouses. He will be missed by his five grandchildren.
A memorial service is to follow. Funeral arrangements are by Ferguson Funeral Home, 27 Third St., Sussex Borough.
