Notes
![]() Note |
sea captain William Knowlton occupation noted as Sea Captain. Died June 6, 1632, at sea, near Annapolis, Annapolis, Nova Scotia (Cite IGI). William, wife and children left England in the Spring of 1632, leaving no word of their destination. They left alone with no ship's crew. The difficult passage to the New World took about seven weeks, and apparently toward the end of the voyage William fell ill and died. The family, with wife Ann Elizabeth Smith now piloting the ship, made landfall in Nova Scotia. They buried Captain William Knowlton on Cape Sable Island, Nova Scotia. In 1839, a land surveyor named Alphonso Wells came across a grave there with "William Knowlton - 1632" carved on a homemade headstone. It is understood that this headstone still stands. After the death of William, the family wintered in Nova Scotia; and then in 1633, sailed down the New England coast to the fledgling Puritan colony of Ipswich, Essex Co., Massachusetts. Ann and the children joined the colony and remained there for many years. |
