Shoe Maker Possibly b. Hingham, MA. Occupation noted as shoemaker. Cite Stocking's (#5) History of the Knowltons (1897). Took the Freeman's Oath in 1680; cite NEHG Register, Vol. 15, Oct. 1861 John descended from the Knowlton family of Kent. He was born in England, probably in Kent, about 1633. His parents were John Knowlton and Marjery Wilson. The elder John came to America with his father sometime around the time of the younger John's birth. The elder John was a resident of Ipswich, Massachusetts in 1639. The elder John was a shoemaker, and had accumulated considerable property by the time of his death in 1655. The younger John married Deborah Grant about 1655, probably in Ipswich. They moved to Wenham about 1666. Deborah was living at that time because she signed a deed that year. Sometime after the move, Deborah died and John married a woman named Sarah. John and Sarah must have moved back to Ipswich, because both of their deaths are recorded there. John was the father of eleven children, some of whom were born of his first wife, but some must have been Sarah's children. John's son Thomas however, was the son of Deborah, because he was born before 1666. John was a shoemaker, like his father. He took part in the Narragansett Expedition in 1670. Sometime around 1675, he lost his eyesight and the family became nearly destitute. John's uncle Thomas Knowlton, who was childless, assisted the family, even taking in one of John's sons. Thomas also gave the bulk of his estate to John's son Nathaniel in 1688, probably to assist in raising the younger children. That gift was four years after John's death on October 8, 1684 in Ipswich. John's estate was mostly debts, and he left no will. Information for this biography from "The History & Genealogy of the Knowltons of England & America" by Charles H. W. Stocking, and the "Darling Papers" of Ipswich. |
