first wife was Marjery Carter who died in 1698 Thomas was descended from the Knowlton family of Kent. He was born on in Ipswich, Massachusetts, the son of John Knowlton and Deborah Grant. When Thomas was a teenager, his father, who was a shoemaker, lost his sight, and the family became nearly destitute. John's uncle, Thomas Knowlton, who was childless, assisted the family, taking in one of Thomas' brothers, and giving the bulk of his estate to Thomas' older brother, Nathaniel, in 1688, probably to assist the family after John died in 1684. Thomas married Marjery Goodhue in about 1692. They had six children. Marjery died on August 23 1699. A few years later, on June 6, 1706 in Beverly, Thomas married Mary Coy, the daughter of John Coy and Elizabeth Edwards. Mary was born in Beverly on December 21, 1683. Thomas and Mary had two children. Thomas wrote his will in Shrewsbury and died there on February 4, 1749-50. His estate was probated on February 27. His wife declined to be the administrator of the estate, so his son by his first wife, Joseph, was appointed to the position. The estate was valued at 385 Pounds, most of which was bonds from his children, to whom he had lent most of the value of the estate before he died. The date of the death of Mary has not been found.
