Eugene was raised near Green Bay. After his father died, it appears he lived with his uncle John who happens to own timber land. Perhaps this is how Eugene learned how to be the owner of a logging company. EUGENE S. SHEPARD, born March 22, 1854 in Wisconsin, died March 26, 1923 in Rhinelander, Onieda, Wis. His parents were S A and Lydia Shepard, thrown upon his own resources has carved out a very comfortable position in the world; beginning at fourteen years of age, he has thoroughly mastered his business and knows Northern Wisconsin "like a book", Mr Shepard has for years acted for Cornell University, selling thousands of acres of its lands and does besides a large business, locating lands, extimating values of timbers and lands and preventing timber steals from lands in his charge. G A Murray grocer New London, came to New London from Ohio in 1874 and in company with E S Shepard, beagan business as a real estate agent. In 1877 and 1878 he was Chief of Police; began his present business about two years ago and bought out his partner, Silas Giles in February 1881. Mr Murray was born in Geauga Co., Ohio, where he lived until he was twenty-one years of age. Was educated in Madison Seminary, taught three terms of school in Ohio and four in Wisconsin, the last term as Principal of the school in District No 1, New London. Is a Freemason, and is Secretary of the Hook and Ladder Company here. His wife was Lydia Moseley, of Geauga Co., Ohio. Mr Murray lacked only twenty-three votes of the elction as Register of Deeds in his county in the fall of 1880. He spent his childhood in the area around New London, and moved to Rhinelander in 1885, where he worked as a surveyor and timber cruiser for various lumber companies and drew up a plat book for Oneida and Vilas counties. Famed as a humorist and practical joker, Shepard recounted many of the Paul Bunyan stories, and his "Hodag <http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/wlhba/articleView.asp?pg=49&orderby=&id=6036&pn=1&key=&cy=>" monster hoax did much to popularize Oneida County as a tourist attraction. His humorous sketches illustrating the Paul Bunyan legend were widely circulated. In the later years of his life, Shepard operated a resort near Rhinelander. F. L.
