1790 - possibly of Lebanon, Dauphin, PA ANNALS OF BUFFALO VALLEY - 1812 (Chester County PA) "Joseph McCool, Peter Nevius worked together" The streets were re-surveyed in the spring of 1813, and a slight angle made to suit the buildings. James Geddes and Thomas Fisher carried on a tannery. Peter Nevius, Joseph McCool, and Andrew Best were their apprentices. 1836 ANNALS OF BUFFALO VALLEY "Joseph McCool" 4th of July celebration terminated unfortunately. Towards evening, a party were firing a cannon at the foot of St. John street. They had fired twice, when, in the act of ramming the third charge, it exploded. Joseph McCool had his right hand blown off, and his arm had to be amputated below the elbow. John Bower lost his two forefingers. Peter Bower had his thumb torn off. Chester County was one of the three original counties of Pennsylvania created by William Penn in 1682. It was named for Cheshire, England. It is part of the Delaware Valley area. --wikipedia-- Chester, Philadelphia, and Bucks Counties were the three original Pennsylvania counties created by William Penn in 1682. At that time Chester County's borders were Philadelphia County to the north, the Susquehanna River to the west, the Delaware River to the east, and Delaware and Maryland to the south. The fourth county in the state, Lancaster County, was formed from Chester County on May 10, 1729. On March 11, 1752 Berks County was formed from the northerm section of Chester County, as well as parts of Lancaster and Philadelphia Counties. The original Chester County seat was the naval shipbuilding city of Chester. However, it became part of Delaware County when it was formed from the eastern portion of the Chester County on September 26, 1789. This took the county seat out of Chester County, so West Chester became the new county seat that year, and has remained so to the present. |

From Joyce McCool...partial letter... REFERENCE: McCool Papers from the collection of Mary C. Foster, Madison, Wisconsin "Joseph McCool went to Pennsylvania and lived at Chilisquaque near Lewisburg, PA. His right arm was shot off during a fourth of July celebration, by the bursting of a cannon. In 1840 he moved to northern Illinois near Freeport bringing his entire family with him. His journey from Lewisburg down the Ohio River and up the Mississippi river to Keithsburg took 26 days." Letters from Joseph McCool in the possession of Mary Stuart Foster, were written with his left hand and look like script. REFERENCE: Handwritten letter from Joseph McCool of Lewisburg, PA to his brother Martin R. McCool of Warren Co., KY, Bowling Green Post Office, dated February 12, 1837: "Dear Brother: I take my pen in hand to address a few lines to you again to answer your letter of the 15th June last." "......I was labouring under the most excrutiating pain from a hurt received on the 4th, an account of which I shall attempt to give you." "In the afternoon of that day, a number of the citizens of this place took it in mind to have a few salutes fired from an old piece of artillery which has laid at this place from time immemorial. I was requested to assist in charging the piece.....and while engaged raming, the powder ignited and exploded. I had just placed my right hand on the end of the hammer and had a firm hold of it and the consequence was, my hand was torn off at the wrist, the bones of this arm were stripped of the flesh half way to the elbow, and the arm from the elbow to the shoulder torn almost off and what remained were all afire, and my face was as black as any negro and badly burned. Some of those present took hold of me and ran into the river to extinguish the fire. They then carried me to the bank again and laid me down and in a short time, I became sensible of what had happened. A surgeon was immediately sent for, he being convenient, came to me after carrying me out from where I was, a distance of about one fourth a mile. They then proceeded to the amputation of the arm which was done about 3 inches below the elbow. The operation was performed by Dr. VanVolzah, assisted by Dr. Beck. At the time they operated on me, they were fully of the opinion that a few hours would terminate my life." "To the burns, an application of slippery elm bark was the only thing made up of and I think for a burn, it is an invaluable thing as it extracts the fire and at the same time, healed my face and left no marks, although it was as new as a piece of beef. On the 14th day after the accident, the arm began to mortify and a great quantity of flesh fell off the arm, but by the application of a poultice of persimmon bark, the mortification was stopped and it began to heal and in a short time, it was sound." "My sight is also much injured. I cannot distinguish persons at a distance as formerly. My health is as good as it ever was, thanks to that Almighty who still holds and controls the issues of life and death. The health of my family is as usual. I have forgotten whether I informed you of the birth of our last. He was born on the 18th of Nov. 1835 and we call him James Geddis. He is a fine healthy boy and as michief as any call for." "I must now conclude this letter by wishing that it may find yourself and family and my aged Mother and likewise, John Harpool and sister Margaret with all these who are near and dear to me in the enjoyment of all earthly blessings and what is far better, in the enjoyment of a blissful heaven, so that if we should meet no more in time, we may all meet in that better land above, which is the sincere wish of your affectionate brother, until death."
