References: Nevada Evening Journal, July 27, 1923; George Marsh; Warren Keagle; U.S. Census:1850-Ohio, Erie Co.; 1870-Iowa, Story Co., Collins Twp; Last Will & Testament from L.A. County, Ca. (#63124); Lewis William Marsh was born in England to Jeremiah and Jane Burden Marsh. A family story tells that the family was in London at the time of Queen Victoria's coronation and the procession passing the house where they were. Lew was a baby and he was taken out to view the procession as it passed by. The authenticity of this is not known, although it is certainly possible. The family came to the United States when Lewis was seven years old and to Illinois when he was a young man. A devoted family member, Lewis married Laura Augusta Hartpence in Marshalltown, Iowa, in 1865. He later moved to Story County, Iowa, and farmed there until his retirement when he took his wife and daughters to California. During his parents lifetime, he and Andrew found themselves back in Illinois farming for their parents and from correspondence left behind, it is apparent that their efforts were never good enough nor long enough. L.W. is reported by family to have had a terrible temper and was given to violence. As an example, the story is told of his wife and daughters saving egg money to buy a sewing machine which they kept hidden from him. When the machine was discovered some time later, L.W. took it out in the yard and smashed it to bits. He later bought the ladies another sewing machine. An industrious man, at one time Lewis owned many buildings in the town of Collins, Iowa. He was 5'8" in height and wore a full wig, being vain by nature. Family pictures attest to his being handsome. When Lewis died, the farm land was divided so that Scott got the acres with the buildings, Walter got the 40 acres across the road that adjoined his own 40 acres, Ralph sold his 40 acres to Scott to repay the debt he owed the others for misappropriated rents he had collected for his father. Emmett & Grace Weese wanted the home farm, but got the 60 acres that lay south of the east-west road and adjacent to the rail road tracks. It was felt they received that parcel because they had gone to California and cared for the parents in their last illnesses and had been rewarded then. Obituary from the Nevada Evening Journal, 27 July 1923 In the recent death at the home in Pasadena, Calif., L.W. Marsh, 85, one of the pioneers of the Collins neighborhood passed on. The body was brought back from California and the funeral services were held from the E.B. Weese home Tuesday afternoon at three, after which interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery of Collins. The services were in charge of Rev. Papul Hicks. L.W. Marsh, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Marsh was born in England, June 11, 1838, and passed away July 16, 1923 at the age of 85 years, 1 month and 5 days. At the age of seven years he came with his parents to this country. In 1865 he was united in marriage to Laura A. Hartpence and four years later settled near Collins. To this union were born eight children, five girls and three boys, three of the girls having preceded him in death. In 1896, they moved to Pasadena, Calif., where he lived until his death. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Collins, until he transferred his membership to the First Methodist Church at Pasadena where he remained a faithful member until the last. Besides his faithful wife he leaves to mourn his passing three sons and two daughters. R.E. of Charles City, J.W. of Collins, Scott of Osage, Laura Keagle and Grace Weese of Collins, also twenty-seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren besides a host of friends. He served as conservator of the property of the Sunderlin family although nothing is known of the circumstances making this necessary.
