1. Freeman Perry resided upon the homestead in South Kingstown left by his father, and died honored and respected by his entire community. He was a physician and surgeon, also a man active in the public business of the town and the Colony, holding from time to time several important positions.He took the oath in South Kingstown April 30, 1754. He was actively engaged in public affairs in 1767, '77, '79, '80 and '81. He was for many years President of the Town Council of South Kingstown and was elected Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas for Washington County 1787, '88, '89, '90 an '91 and for about 15 years after (1810).2. Freeman Perry's home was what is now commonly called, "Commodore Perry's birthplace," which is actually the Commadores father's birthplace in Matunuck. That home was sold, Oliver H. Perry purchased it back then built a new home there. In 1792, he (Freeman) gave a part of this, his homestead farm, to his son, Dr. Joshua Perry, and the next year he gave ten acres of the same farm to his son Christopher Raymond Perry. By will, written in 1820, and proved in 1815, he gave the remaining part of the farm, "with my mansion house where I now live," to Christopher Raymond Perry. This will also gives to his grandson, George Hazard Perry, "my books on physics and surgery;" to his grandson, Freeman Perry, "my surveying instruments;" to his daughter, Elizabeth Champlin, wife of Stephen, "the beaufet in the great room where I now live, it having formerly belonged to her grandmother, Elizabeth Hazard;" to his grandson, Raymond Perry, "my watch [Richard Trapp, London, Maker No. 11226]; to his grandson, William Browning Champlin, "the silver spoons that I bought at the venue of William Rodman, marked S.R.;" and to his granddaughter, Sarah Comstock, silver spoons marked M.H.3. From the "Providence Patriot" October 23, 1813:"Death of Hon. Freeman Perry died in South Kingstown on Friday October 22nd, the Hon. Freeman Perry aged 83 years,grandfather of the gallant Commodore Perry. He was upwards of twenty years a Judge of the Court for Washington County and for many years President of the Town Council of South Kingstown.Such was the impartiality, honesty and integrity of this remarkable man that for many years he has been called upon as an arbitrator for the settlement of differences among his townsmen and his decisions were generally accepted."4. Freeman Perry was in a list of men belonging to Capt. Ebenezer Newels Co., who received arms from the Province Store dated North Kingston Dec. 15, 1777. He also was a private in Capt. Ebenezer Newels Co. Col Danforth Keyes Regiment: his original enlistment was September 12, 1777 for 6 months from July 1, 1777 roll dated Providence R.I.; also same company and regiment bounty allowed for service from three months after date of enlistment Sept 12, 1777 and Jan 4, 1778 23 days at R.I.5. His date of death is recorded in the "Vital Records of Western New York 1809-1850", by Fred Q.
