Martin D. Zimmerman, 65 years old a veteran of the Civil War, died from Brights disease Friday night after a lingering illness. The funeral was held from the U.B. church Sunday afternoon, services being conducted by Rev. J.P. Hight. Losure Post G.A.R. of which Mr. Zimmerman was amember had charge of the funeral. The burial was in Wauseon cemetery. Martin D. Zimmerman was born in Wayne county, Ohio, November 24, 1844. He came with his parents to Fulton county when a small child and he had been a resident of this county ever since, excepting three years he resided in Williams county, Ohio. He enlisted in the 86th regiment as drummer boy and received an honorable discharge from three enlistments. Since the war he had been one of the prime factors in the Grand Army Drum Corps. Mart, as he was familiarly called, conceived the plan of organizing the lads of Wauseon, Delta and vicinity to take the place of the Grand Army Drum Corps. The organization formed was named "The Fulton County Martial Band." It became the pride and joy of Mr. Zimmerman. Mr. Zimmerman's love for music was equaled by his love for flowers. His home was a very flower garden from early Spring to Winter. On October 19, 1865 he was married to Sarah J. Snyder. They had two daughters, Mrs. E.W. Harvey of Toledo and Mrs. F.T. Jewell of Wauseon. About thirty years ago, under the pastorate of Rev. B.S.Klotz, Mr. Zimmerman joined the United Brethren Church. Every time he expressed himself on the subject of religion he said, "My title is clear." Besides his wife and daughters; he leaves 10 grand-children, one brother 4 sisters, Mrs. Tency Dunn of Butler, Ind., Mrs. Mary Porter of Wauseon, Mrs. Celia Braughton of Pettisville and Mrs. Margaret Barnes of Niagra Falls, N.Y. |
