Michael went to the Santa Fe Trail in 1849 with a group of Masons, stopping off at Socorro, new Mexico while the others went to California in search of gold. he became a contract surgeon with the U.S. Army Dragoons. In 1852 he was appointed Indian Agent for the Southern Apache by President Millard Fillmore. He was later re-appointed by Presidents Franklin Pierce and James Buchanan. President Lincoln appointed him Superintendent of Indian Affairs in 1863. |
