[gattshall phillip.ged] [Test2.ftw] Source for death: Marion County, Ohio Death Record::::DOD 06/18/1880***Age 64 years 8 months Place of death:::Richland Township***Place of birth::: Pennsylvania****Cause of death::: Typhoid Notes for PHILLIP GATTSHALL: According to Marriage Records, Marion Co., OH (Film #384242) Phillip Gattshall was born 18 Oct 1815 in Pennsylvania. He was married 22 Oct 1839, by Rev Clymer to Maria Barry. He was a farmer who belonged to the United Brethren Church, and he lived in Westfield Twp., Richland Twp., PA. His father was Daniel Gattshall, and his mother Hanna Dunkelberger. He died at his home in Richland Twp., Marion Co., OH, on Friday, 18 June 1880, of congestion of the liver in a complicated form. Nothing seemed to give him greater pleasure than to see his family all together. In pretentions he was quiet and unassuming, always endeavoring to make his acts a sufficient guarantee for his intentions. During the whole of his last illness he did not entertain any hopes of getting well. When informed that he was approaching death, he said: 'The will of the Lord be done, what have I lived for if I am not now prepared to die. I am going to a place of rest.' He was buried at Shawtown Cemetery, Westfield Twp., Cardington, OH. The 1850 census of Richland Twp., Marion Co., OH shows: 771 778 Philip Gutshall 35 M Laborer 400 PA., cannot read & write Maria 32 F MD., cannot read & write In the 1860 census of Richland Twp., Marion Co., OH, Phillip and Maria were living on a farm in Richland Twp., Marion Co., with four children (Rachel E. Gattshall, Joshua B. Gattshall, John Wayne Gattshall, Eunice Marinda Gattshall). Living close by were Walter Barry, wife Lydia, and two daughters (Zenetta & Ella), ages 4 & 2. Walter J. Barry was brother to Maria. About 1970 a tornado blew away the Westfield Twp House and all the cemetery records. Yet some of the records are preserved on LDS film #49509, Pt 1, Marriage Records, Marion Co., OH. The apparent discrepancies have not yet been reconciled. --Gattshall Family History by Arthur L. Duell, MD Marion County, Ohio Death Record Volume I, 1867-1880 Gattshall, Phillip, died 06/18/80, age 64 years 8 months, place Richland Township, Ohio, Birth Place Pennsylvania, cause of death Typhoid. [test4.FTW] [data.gott.ged] In 1881 Daniel Gattshall bought 100 acres of land in Delaware Co., OH from his father-in-law, Christopher Dunkelberger. Daniel and wife Hannah took possession of the 100 acres in Westfield txp,Delaware Co, OH in 1822 when the son Phillip was 7 years old. On 22 Oct 1839 Philip married Maria Barry (b. 12 Feb 1818; d. 20 Feb 1897). They lieved on a farm in "Richland Township, Marion Co., OH, and begat 4 children, one of whom was John Wayne Gattshall. Neither Phillip nor his wife were literate. Both are buried in Shawtown Cemetery, Westfield Twp, but Phillip preceded his wife, Maria, in death by 17 years. As a consequency John Wayne assummed responsibility for care of his mother, Maria, and also care of the farm. Maria Barry Gattshall was described as a dominant woman, a trait not easily tolerated by John Wayne. |
