Cause of Death: Acute ure mia [Hicks_March_2002.FTW] Robert recalls sitting inhis fa ther's second-floor dentist office, waiting for him to finish up his morni ng appointments. John, Forrest and Robert would then go to a local restaurant, w here John would order his favorite - oyster soup. With respect to living i n the segregated South, Robert vividly remembers how the blacks had separat e restrooms and drinking fountains. He also remembers incidences where,when w alking on the sidewalk hand-in-hand with his father, blacks would stepoff i n to the street to allow them to pass by. As the U.S. slipped into the Grea t Depression, the value of John's investments plummeted. Robert remembers his dad opening his safe and showing him stock certificates that had become wort hless. On top of this, John was hit by a car and broke his collarbonewhich c urtailed his dentistry practice. Sometime afterwards, John became desponde n t over his financial situation and his ability to care for his family. At o n e point, he went downstairs to the basement to get an axe with the intenti on of killing his wife and young son to spare them from suffering andstarvat io n. Robert could hear his mother pleading with John on the stairs to stop. Som ehow, she was able to convince him to stop and she contacted Forrest. Fo rres t came over and stayed with the family to keep an eye on John. Forrest s lept with a pistol under his pillow! |
