Coplien, Burton

BRODHEAD/McALLEN, TX-Burton Coplien, age 76, passed away Sun., Nov. 26,2000, at McAllen Medical Center, McAllen, TX. He was born on June 19, 1924, in a farmhouse south of Juda, WI, the son of Elmer and Nettie ‎(Frankenburger)‎Coplien. He married Joanne Horst Fulton on Oct. 10, 1981, in Brodhead. Burton grew up in Wisconsin. He moved to Pecatonica, IL, in 1939, graduating from Pecatonica High School in 1943. He entered the service in
Nov. of 1943, and served in the South Pacific in World War 11, serving one year of occupation duty in Japan. He was discharged from the US Marine Corps as a Staff Sargent in July of 1946. Burton started his life's vocation the following year, entering barber college in Chicago, IL, and obtaining a barber's license. A short time later, he attended beauty
culture school and continued in that line of work the rest of his life. He worked in Beloit for 6 years before opening his own beauty salon in Brodhead in 1955, which he operated for 35 years. Burton had been an officer in the Rock County Hairdresser's Assoc., past commander of the American Legion, secretary/treasurer of 3 corporations: Stateline Developers Inc., Cardinal Land Co., Inc., and Twin Towers, Inc. He was an avid golfer and was past president of the Decatur Lake Country Club, a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, and VFW Post 6858, all of Brodhead.

Burton is survived by his wife, Joanne of Brodhead; 2 sons, Mike ‎(Kim)‎ Coplien of Madison, and Scoff Coplien of Evansville; 2 daughters, Barbara ‎(Richard)‎ Niedermeier of Janesville, and Laura Coplien of New Glarus, WI; a
special step-daughter, Roseanne ‎(Vic)‎ Bartosch of Cottage Grove, WI; 4 step-children: Nancy ‎(Scott)‎ Garifty of Edgerton, Dan ‎(Suzanne)‎ Fulton of Rapid City, SD, Mike ‎(Adeline)‎ Fulton, and Susan ‎(Robert)‎ Schwartzlow both of Brodhead; 2 brothers, Russell ‎(Carol)‎ Coplien of Mission, TX, and Bobble Coplien of Brodhead; a sister, Bernice ‎(Leslie)‎ Curry of Footville; 2 sisters-in-law, Ruth Coplien of Brodhead, and Dorothy Coplien of Richland Center, WI; a brother-in-law, Louis Anderson of Brodhead; 21 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Burton was preceded in death by his
parents; 2 brothers, Kenneth and Donald; and a sister, Isabelle Anderson,.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Fri., Dec. 1, 2000, at the BETHLEHEM LUTHERAN CHURCH, Brodhead, with Rev. Randy Krause officiating. Burial with full military rites will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Brodhead. Visitation will be on Thursday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 8:00 p.m. at the NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, Brodhead.

Memorials can be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or the Fiesta Village RV Park, Mission, TX.
