Shown as a single man in the 1786 tax listings for Westmoreland Co, PA. From Custodian of Public Records, Harrisburg, PA, Dec 30 1909: ''To whom it may concern: I hereby certify that one John Hager was a private in Capt. William Berryhill's Co, First Battalion, Cumberland County Militia, Aug 5 1780. (Pa. Archives, 5th Series, Vol. 8, Page 80.)'' Signed: Luther R. Kelker, Custodian. From Fayette/Washington/Greene Counties: 1835 Pension Roll, Greene Co, PA. Name: John Hager Rank: Private & fifer Annual Allowance: 31.00 Sums Received: 67.50 Description of service: Pennsylvania militia When placed on the pension roll: February 5, 1833 Commencement of pension: March 4, 1831 Age: 75 This John appears to be the same Johannes Hauger b bef 1767, d 1855, who married Rosina Fischer. Considering the dates, names, family info, and geography, he is so listed, as a son of Kilian Hager; note however, that this is not proven. He apparently was a Bucks Co Hager, who changed his name from Hager to Hauger, to reflect the common pronunciation of Hager as ''Hah'-ger''. --------------------- Bob Hauger affidavit signed by George Hauger for Joseph Hauger's marriage license. Kathleen Hughes had already provided information about this affidavit some time ago. The next day after our fruitless trip to Batavia, Don visited the Cincinnati Library and found baptism records for George and Joseph Hauger in a book titled ''The German Church Records Of Western Pennsylvania, 1772 - 1791'' (Third Revised Edition 1984). This may not be new to everyone else but we had not seen this book before. Following is info. from the book pertaining to the baptisms (with the spelling of names as shown in the book): GEORGE HAUGER BAPTISM --------------------------------------------- Child Baptized: Joh. Georg Birth: 26 Apr 1788 Baptism: 28 Jun 1788 Parents: Johannes and Rosina Haager Sponsors: Joh. Georg and Dorothea Fischer JOSEPH HAUGER BAPTISM ---------------------------------------------- Child Baptized: Joseph Birth: 13 Apr 1790 Baptism: 22 Aug 1790 Parents: Johannes and Rosina Haager Sponsors: (none listed) NAMES LISTED IN THE INDEX ----------------------------------------------- Children's Index: Hager, John George - 1788 Hager, Joseph - 1790 Parents Index: Hager, John and Rosina Sponsors Index: Fischer, John George and Dorothy Some of this info. is new, or different from what I have seen before: (1) The name of Johannes' wife is Rosina ; (2) George Hager/Hauger's date of birth is shown as 26 Apr 1788, and his first name is likely John or Johannes; and, (3) Joseph Hager/Hauger's date of birth may be April 13, 1790 instead of April 4, 1790. I hope this information is helpful. Bob Hauger Plainfield, Indiana ------------------ From Janice Case John Hauger and family came to Washington Co., In. Sometime between 1810 and 1820. He appears on the 1820 Census in Washington Co., In. He was over the age of 45 born before 1775 and female, probably his wife was over the age of 45 born before 1775. Males, probably sons: 1 age 16-25 1 age 26-44, 2 females age 16-25. His occupation was in Agriculture. In Voters list for 1820, Wash. Co, we find John Hauger, George Hauger & Solomon Hauger. A guess on the son age 16-25 is Jacob Hauger b. 1801 Ky. That married Katherine J. Hubbard Aug 21, 1821 in Wash. Co. The son age 26-44 could be George Hauger. A guess one daughter age 16-25 is Elizabeth Hauger married Daniel Morgan March 28, 1822 in Wash. Co., In. And the other daughter possible Catharine Hauger Born Pa. Married Phillip Copple Nov. 15, 1842 at the age of abt. 48, in Wash. Co., In. In 1840 census George Hauger's age is 40-50 and probably household female is a wife or sister Catharine age 40-50. By 1850 census George Hauger is living in Phillip Copple and Catharine Hauger Copple's house: my best guess is Catharine is George's sister. In 1850 census Solomon Hauger family and Jacob Hauger family are living close to each other in Posey Twp. Wash. Co., In. In 1820 census Solomon Hauger is living near John Hauger: Solomon's household is 1 male 26- 44 and 1 son under 10 and wife 16-25. Solomon was born 1791 in Ky. Joseph Hauger is mentioned in grandson, Newton Jerome Hauger's obituary as his grandfather coming as one of the early pioneers to Washington Co., In. settling his farm just west of Salem, In. Year 1816. Joseph Hauger was born 1790 in Pa., and wife Jane and two small sons born in Clermont Co., Oh. Came to Washington Co., In. About the same time as John Hauger and family. Did the Joseph Hauger family miss the census taker and where were they living in 1820? On May 23, 1822 Joseph & John Hauger appeared at the Washington Co. Court and filed a lawsuit against John McCullough for an unpaid debt and the suit continued until the year 1824 with Joseph Hauger winning the suit. John Hauger was a witness on Joseph Hauger's will dated Feb 8, 1836. Joseph Hauger's son, Jacob b. 1816, appeared before the clerk of the Court of Common Pleas of Washington Co., In. On September 11, 1865 stating that witnesses for Joseph Hauger's will, John Hauger and Burr Bradley have been dead for at least ten years and that he was well acquainted with Joseph Hauger's handwriting and Joseph's will signature is genuine. Joseph Hauger is now deceased. (Joseph Hauger's death date is August 26, 1865). By the above associations, I believe that John Hauger died before the year 1855. He is possibly the father of George Hauger b. 1788 Pa., Joseph Hauger b. 1790 Pa., Solomon Hauger b. 1791 Ky., Jacob Hauger b. 1801 Ky. And Elizabeth Hauger married 1822 and Catherine Hauger b.1794 Pa. We have Census records for the previous mentioned Hauger's in Washington, Co., In., marriage records, court records and land transfers located in the Washington Co., In. Court House, Salem, In. To prove without a doubt records need to be located in Kentucky, Ohio and Pennsylvania if any are in existence. Note similar names of children in Jacob Hauger b. 1801 and Joseph Hauger b. 1790 Joseph Hauger's children: John Hauger b. 1814, Jacob Hauger b. 1816, William Hauger b. 1819, Joseph L. Hauger b. 1825, James Hauger b. 1829, Elizabeth b. 1832. |
