Historical Society Salem, Indiana John Hauger an old and well known citizen of Salem, died at his old home on south Main street, Saturday afternoon, Feb. 2, 1895. Mr. Hauger was born in Clermont county, Ohio, Sept. 28, 1814, and was therefore in his 81st year. He was married to Malinda K. Prather, March 7, 1838, and they lived together 53 years, until her death which occurred about four years ago. He lived in the old home 57 years and here all their eleven children were born and from this home five were carried to their last resting place. The names of these children were, Theodore T., Walter W., John, Henry, D. W., and one who died in infancy. The six children living are Sophia, Adelia, Newton J., Lizzie, Francis A., and Charles C. Sophia resides at Seymour, Adelia and Francis in Hamilton, Ohio, Lizzie in New Albany, Newton and Charles in Salem. All are married except Newton. Mr. Hauger was a hard working man in his earlier days, and was a wagon-maker by trade. He had quite a manufactory here at one time, and did a large business in wagon and carriage making in his shops, then located where the J. D. McKinney and H. H. Routh buildings now stand, on south Main street. His familiar figure passing up and down Main street between house and shop, was one of the earliest recollections of the writer. For several years he has been seriously afflicted mentally and physically, though confined to his room but a few short months. The funeral took place from the esidence Monday afternoon, at 3:30, after which the remains were laid besides those of his wife in the family lot in Crown Hill. Malinda K., wife of John Hauger, died at her home in Salem, Monday, July 13th, at the age of 70 years. Mrs. Hauger's maiden name was Prather and her only surviving sister is Mrs. Ruth Montgomery, of Paoli, Ind. To Mr. and Mrs. Hauger were born eleven children, six of whom survive their mother. These are Sophia, wife of Elias Champion, of Seymour, Ind.; Adelia, wife of Fred Heimath, of Hamilton, Ohio; Lizzie, wife of J. W. Whalen, of New Albany, Ind.; Fannie, wife of Edward Birdsong, of Hamilton, Ohio; Newton J. and Charles C., of Salem. All of the children were present at the funeral, which was conducted by Rev. L.S. Kuotts, Tuesday evening. Mrs. Hauger sustained a high character as a lady and Christian and had been a consistant member of the M.E. Church for 40 years.
