She married Elias Champion November 29, 1859 in Salem, Washington, Indiana, son of Elias Champion and Esther Strong. He was born April 30, 1834 in Springfield, Massachusettes, and died Unknown in Seymour, Indiana. : died age 72 years, 11 mo, and 23 days Elias Champion was a carpenter and a builder. He left Salem soon after the birth of his eldest child and settled in Seymour. Of his daughters, Hun remained unmarried and one married a Joseph C. Baxter of Shelbyville, IN, another married a John W. Hughes an the other married a -- Miles. Deputy Marshall Children of Sophia Hauger and Elias Champion are: John Reuben4 Champion, born December 26, 1860 in Indiana. He married Bettie Levi of Seymour, Indiana June 30, 1884. Minnie Hester Champion, born January 19, 1863 in Indiana. She married John A. Miles of Seymour, Indiana May 31, 1883. Adelia Ellen Champion, born November 03, 1866 in Indiana. Was still living in 1956 ------------- obituary of Sophia Jane Champion Mrs. Elias Champion Passes Away at the Age of 72 Aged and Repected Lady Expires This Afternoon After Illness of Several Months After and illness of several months duration, Mrs. Sophia J. Champion, wife of Elias Champion, died at the family residence, 113 N. Broadway, at 1:20 o'clock this afternoon. Mrs. Champion was born Sept. 11, 1842, at Salem, Ind., making her age 72 years, eleven months, and 23 days. On Nov. 29, 1859, she was married to Mr. Champion, and they came at once to Seymour and have lived continually in the same house throughout their long wedded life and in 1909 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in the house in which they began housekeeping. Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Champion, five of whom, with the husband and father, are left to mourn her loss. They are: Mrs. Minnie Miles and Mrs. Joseph Baxter, of Shelbyville, Mrs. John Hughes, of East St. Louis, Ill., James of New Athens, Ill., and Edward of Chicago. Three Sisters, Mrs. Fred Heinseith and Mrs. Edward Birdsong, both of Hamilton, Ohio, and Mrs. John Whalen, of New Albany, two brothers, Newton Hauger of Salem and Charles Hauger, of Indianapolis, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive her. Mrs. Champion had been a life long member of the Methodist church and was a woman of many beautiful traits of Christian character, loved and respected by all who knew her. During her long and useful life she was always looking for an opportunity to do good and help some one. She was also a member of the Woman's Relief Corps, and had been active in the work of that organization while her health permitted. The funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2:30 from the residence, in charge of Rev. J. H. Carnes, of the First M. E. Church. The Woman's Relief Corps will have charge of the services at Riverview cemetery. |
