![]() Note |
Kilian Hager was shown in Philadelphia in the early 1749 census of Phila. He first spent time in Bucks Co, PA, before moving sometime after 1756 to Huntington Twp, in Westmoreland Co, PA, and then to Tazewell Co, VA, and finally to Boone Co, WV. Some researchers think he came to America as a single man. It appears that all of the Hagers from Siegen, Germany, are all probably related in some way. This includes the Hagers of Hagerstown, David (1712) and Jonathan (1719); Killian ''Callie''Hager (<1729) of Westmoreland County; Johannes Hager (1734)(1724?) of Berks County; Johannes Hager (~1701); Jacob Hager Sr (<1765) of Chester County; Hendrick Hager (1702); and the Haugers of Indiana. It is possible that Johannes Hager b 1734 in Siegen, Germany, and Kilian Hager b 1729 in Siegen, Germany were brothers; no supporting evidence other than their concurrent presence in Pennsylvania and identical birthplace. From Joel Hager: ''Kilian Hager came [thru Philadelphia} from Germany in 1749 on the ship 'Dragon' and appears to have been closely related to Phillip Hager, Sr. (1735-1807) of Tazewell County, VA and perhaps his brother or uncle. For recording purposes I have listed him as Phillip's brother. Some question that Kilian also known as Callie or Callahan ever made it to what is now know as Boone County, West Virginia, but there is a reference in the 100 acre land patent of Michael and James Hager on Six Mile Creek in 1812. The land is described as ''Beginning on a white oak, about 20 poles from Cilly's grave.'' There is no definitive proof that this is Kilian Hager's grave, but a number of researchers have made this assumption. Sigfus Olason mentions Kilian Hager in his ''The Hager Family of Southern West Virginia'' and his connection to Philip Hager of Bucks County but he also makes the assumption that Phillip Hager of Tazewell County may have been Philip of Bucks County son as well. Sigfus also states the following in a letter dated February 18, 1980 to a Mrs. Margaret F. Brooks that six years after Philip Hager arrived ''Kilian Hager, a young man and apparently single, came on the ship 'Dragon', and went to the same place as Philip. I think he was a younger brother of Philip.'' He also states after the description of the land patent on Six Mile Creek referenced above ''More than 50 years ago I asked several of the older Hagers; ''Who was Cilly''. and only one remembered having heard old people mention him when he was a boy. From what he said I am satisfied it referred to the Killian mentioned above, although he called him ''old Callahan Hager'', but the Irish Callahan does sound something like the German Killean. I have tried to find Killian's grave but the several old graves there have only sandstone cobble on them.'' The history of perhaps the Bucks County connection of Phillip Hager, Sr. has its roots in the fact that Kilian Hager appears in several documents recorded in Bucks County, Pennsylvania after his arrival in 1749 and indeed came to Tazewell County, VA and later the Boone County, WV area as well as the unproven Philip Hager of Bucks County connection. Since a Kilian Hager settled in Bucks County near Philip Hager, Sr. (1712-1798) of Bucks County, PA who arrived from Germany on the ship 'Lydia' on September 19, 1743, it is entirely possible that Kilian and Philip Hager, Sr. were closely related and Philip may have been Kilian's brother or uncle. However I have seen no reference that proves they were closely related. Since the connection between Philip of Bucks County and Phillip of Tazewell County is steeped in the tradition of the Hager family in Southern West Virginia I suspect there is a strong possibility they are connected. It is fairly certain that Phillip of Tazewell County was not born to Philip Hager of Bucks County in this country. A Kilian and Dorothea Hager are listed as having a son John George Hager born on May 9 and baptized May 19, 1756 in records of the Indianfield Lutheran Church. As the record I have is from notes there is also a reference to a daughter Johanna born December 17, 1759 and baptized on January 28, 1760 and another daughter Anna Maria born December 10, 1757 and baptized March 26, 1758 possible at the same church. Killian and Dorothea Hager sponsored a baptism of John Adam Driess on 3 feb 1789, per ''German Church Records of Western Pennsylvania, 1772-1791, Vol 1. A bond was recorded in Bucks County, PA on April 11, 1764 which states the following: ''Be it remembered that on the 11 Day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty four come before me Uton Hose of the Township of Ironton, County of Bucks and province before me and Frances Hover and Kilian Hagar both of the Township of Springfield of County and province a faced and they personally appeared before me John Lemison one of his Magistry Justice and that Uton Hase and acknowledged himself indebted to our Sovereign Lord the King in the sum of forty pounds good and lawful money of Pennsylvania Frances Prover and Kilian Hagar both of them acknowledged himself indebted to our Sovereign Lord the King each in the sum of twenty pounds current money afforded to be levied on each of them good chattels land, and tenements for of use of the land in of conditions herund or written. The conditions of this recognize and is such that if the above bar___ Uton Hase shall personally appear at of next Court of General Quarter Session of the peace to be P__ at next ______ for the County of Bucks a facing to then and there _____ matter and shall be ob___ against him by baston with and abide this judgement of by court and debit deposit for cost ______ ______ ____ and in of meantime to be of good behavior toward ____ Barton Smith and all of Kings subjects that then this recognize such is to be void and of none effect or else to be in full force and virtue. Taking acknowledged before me.'' As this author has not seen any reference to Kilian Hager in Wythe or Tazewell County, Virginia or in Kanawha or Cabell County, (West) Virginia Census or land records it is tough to prove that he indeed came to what is now Boone County and is buried on Six Mile Creek. However there are references to a Kilian Hager in Bucks County, PA and surrounding counties in the mid to late 1700's. Per Pauline Crevonis: Kilion immigrated to America on the ship Dragon from Rotterdam in 1749 and landed in Philly. He left Bucks Co and settled in Westmoreland Co; he was on the Huntingdon Twp. S. District 1786. He and his wife, Theodora/Dorothea were sponsors for a child there in 1789. One of my Maust cousins is related to the Mackall family and she sent me some info from a book that she has, '' A Genealogical History of a Mackall Family in America'', by Jess R. Finley- 1995. This is about the Kelion, born 12 Dec 1798, Uniontown, PA, s/o Jacob Hager and Mary McCombs. In 1808 he left his home in Waynesburg, Greene Co, PA and went to Barnesville, OH. He was living in Westmoreland Co, PA, in 1786, per the ''Returns of Taxables'', Penna Archives; showed his name as ''Chilion Hager''. According to Jess Finley, the Jacob Hager in Uniontown in the late 1700s was married to Mary McCombs and he was the son of the first Killian and Kelion Jr was born in Uniontown (Fayette Co, PA) on 12 Dec 1798 son of Jacob. By 1850 they were in Belmont co OH, but I wonder how many other children there were and did any of them stay in Fayette Co. Could that John who was married to Nancy be one of them and could Michael be of that family ? Were the Greene co Hagers related to Killian?'' |
