Philip was the son of Jacob Rieser from Canton Bern, Switzerland. Philip's will was dated 23 Aug 1786 and proved 4 June 1789. The will mentions the following children, namely; Anna Elizabeth wife of John Winter; Elisabeth wife of Christian Bossle, Daniel who married an Elizabeth and whose daughter Maria Magdalena married into the Johannes Bar family, John, Catherine, Mary, William, Jacob and Philip.
