Johann was a farmer and a member of the Oley Moravian Church. Johann and Deborah were both first generation, American born, of their respective families. As Johann was the only son of Isaac, all DeTurcks in America spring from this union. Their marriage is spoken of as the ''Great Wedding.'' It took place on the Hoch homestead and was performed by George Boone, Esq., an uncle of the famous woodsman, Daniel Boone. The original marriage certificate has been preserved and is with the Berks County Hstorical Society.Text of the Marriage Certificate:Whereas John DeTurck and Deborah High of Oley, in ye County of Philadelphia, In ye Province of Pennsylvania, Having Published their Intentions of marriage with each other Pursuant to ye laws of this Province in that cause made and Provided, and nothing appearing to obstruct their Proceedings they were accordingly married ye thirteenth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Forty. In ye presence of George Boone, one of the Justices of the Peace for the City and County of Philadelphia and others the Subscribers who have hereunto set their names as Evidence ye day and year above written.Witnesses; George Boone, Esq.; Abraham Bartolet; Ester Bartolet; John Hoch; Deborah Hoch; Johannes Hoch; Samuel Hoch; Mary High; Samuel High, Elizabeth Joder; Henrich Leinbach; Abraham Levan; Catharine Levan.Johann DeTurck's family Bible provides a register of their children.
