John A. Fishley was born in Wüerttemberg, Germany, February 2, 1823, one of two children. His sister and parents spent all their lives in Germany. John A. was reared and educated in Germany and when still a young man in 1852, emigrated to this country, first locating in Huntington, Indiana.On September 7, 1856, Mr. Fishley married Miss Susanna Wales in Fulton Co, Indiana, she being a daughter of George WALES and Mary WALTER. She was born in 1833 in Snyder Co, PA and represents an early colonial ancestry. Susanna was one of eight children: Mary, who married Frederick HOFFMAN; Lucy Ann, who married William OVERMYER; Michael and William (possibly twins), William's second wife was Catherine WALTERS; Susanna, who married John Andrew Fishley (our subject); James; and the youngest, George WALES, Jr. who married Mary A. Ackerman in 1869.John and Susanna Fishley lived in Fulton County from around 1856 until about 1888. Their children were born in Fulton County and those to reach adulthood were Sarah Jane who married John Rich, Ida Mae who married John W. Miller, Amanda who married (1) Clarence Seidner (2) James Belt, Mary Ellen who married James Done in 1876, Lucy A. who married Edward Gearing, James Michael who married Myrtle Adelia Brown, and Charles Alfred who married Alma W. Voigt. Mrs. Fishley also reared John C. who married Elizabeth Sigerfoos, John being from her husband's previous marriage.About 1888, John Sr. moved his family north to Elkhart Co, Indiana.
