1778 Wyoming Valley Massacre in Pennsylvania (age 16) Died at Wrightsville, Pennsylvania Her father ,two brothers and Deborah left New York to take up land in Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania. They arrived at the time of the Wyoming Massacre (7/3/1778). The Indians were massacring the inhabitants and they made their escape by fleeing down the valley and took refuge in Fort Jenkins, about eight miles above Bloomsburg. There being no garrison at the fort and the Indians pursuing them, they fled down the river in a canoe to Fort Shamokin, at Sunbury. At this time, their father was in Philadelphia, Pa., where he had gone to purchase a tract of land from Judge Shippe. He left his three children behind; their ages were: Ashiel--18; Deborah--16; and Daniel--8. The father, having considerable money in gold and silver, hid it in the ground while he went over the mountains to Philadelphia to negotiate for land. After reaching the fort at Sunbury, they wrote to their father of their escape down the river. He told them to come and meet him in Lancaster, which they did. There, Deborah met Benjamin Fowler and were wed. They eventually went back to Columbia County, found their money which was buried in the ruined fort and went to what is now known as Briarcreak and Centre Townships and purchased land on which they ended their years. |
