From a letter dated 15 Oct 1944 - Richard says; ' 'I had my first plane crash onFriday the 13th, How about that? We were flying a C-47 about 200ft. over the field and blooey -- both motors cut out on us. - We just cleared a fence and belly landed into some farmers potato patch. Boy potaotes were fluing right and left. - She nosed up, but didn't go over. - Now, don't write any letters to my Congressmen or news commentators about it or I'll get in serious trouble.- Gas gages registered gas in tanks, but she was accually bone dry. It was classified as a maintenance accident, so we were cleared and they got the blame.'
