I was looking up the Humphrey/Richards family for someone and came acrossyour page on Rootsweb.com. (his brother, Thomas Henry owned thebusiness with him.) Humphrey, Charles T. mechanic, Middle St. Hunt, E. Perhaps the largest tannery wa that of William and Thomas Humphrey,operating in the '70's and probably earlier and later than that. [Startedby Thomas in early '40's; later the sons Thomas H and William were takeninto the business. Their products had a great reputation.] The oldfashioned bark processes prevailed, and considerable business wastransacted by this concern. The plant stood off Middle Street aboutopposite what is now a prtion of Whitman's Pond but we fancy that inearlier time the Pond did not extend so far; the presence of tree stumpsat low water would seen to indicate that area was a forest, and by thesame token the site of the Humphrey tannery was probably more favorablethan it looks today. Weymouth town report; Dec 24, 1879, Edward E Richards and Helen M Hunt, both of Weymouth,married May 2, 1884, Carl Thomas Humphrey born History of Weymouth, p 712, Lodges and Societies: EBENEZER ATHERTON HUNTwas born in Weymouth Jan. 2, 1826, the son of Atherton Nash Hunt and hiswife Susannah Curtis (Hobart) Hunt, He was raised in Orphans Hope LodgeMarch 14, 1860, and was Junior Warden of the Lodge in 1867. In 1869 hewas elected junior Warden of Delta, in 1871 he was Senior Warden and onDecember 12 of the same year he was installed as the third Master of theLodge, a position which lie held for three successive years. Upon thefounding of South Shore Commandery he was offered the position of CaptainGeneral, which he declined with the statement that its a Commandery wassemi-military in character one of short stature had no business to acceptan office in it. He was one of the boot manufacturers of the town andlike his uncle Richard was one of the political leaders of his district.He served his town in various capacities, including that of chief of thefire department, selectman for a number of terms and Representative inthe lower house in 1873. In 1875 and 1876 he served in the State Senate.He was a member of the Union Congregational Church, a trustee of theWeymouth Savings Bank from 1875 to 1881 and by his contemporaries wasconsidered one of the solid and able men of the town.
