SANDY CURTIS PETERS REMEMBERS- My grandfather James Franklin Keeler was a very gentle, soft-spoken man and his son is much like his Dad. Grandpa kept several things on hand for the grandchildren to enjoy when visiting. In the basement he had a rubber-tipped dart board, which was fun. Plus in the living room, on the mantle, were two favorite toys - a red chicken that laid whit, marble eggs and a wooden dog that was held together by string. When you pressed the bottom of it, different parts of the dog moved. Grandpa Keeler started a small savings account for each of his grandchildren, and encouraged us to regularly contribute small amouns to it. He was a good example for young ones to follow. JAMES FRANKLIN KEELER. After graduation from high school in Moxham, Pa. (near Johnstown), he worked at the Moxham Paper Company and saved his money to go to college. At age 21, he left the Johnstown area and moved to Alliance, Ohio to attend Mount Union College. He did some odd jobs to help with expenses and somehow, shortly after starting college he became acquainted with a bachelor dentist, Charles Rice, who lived with his mother. They became good friends and Frank moved in with the Rice family. After graduation in June of 1906, Charles Rice invited Frank to travel to Europe with him. That was a big year. In June was graduation; that summer he spent traveling in Europe; on September 1 he accepted a position as Associate Secretary of the Inter-Collegiate Dept. of the West Philadelphia Y.M.C.A., Philadelphia and on December 29, he married Florence Mayberry. He probably knew her from school days, since their parent's homes were only a couple of blocks from each other in Johnstown. They were married in her parent's home at 600 Grove Ave., in Moxham. He kept the position with the Y.M.C.A. for 35 years. Florence and Frank were married 43 years when she died of a stroke. Music was always a big part of Frank's life. He sang in several groups at college, later in church and at the Y.M.C.A. He was an ordained Methodist lay preacher, deacon and Sunday school superintendent. Besides music and church work, he enjoyed photography. He experimented with black and white photographs and developed his own pictures in his basement dark room. History was also one of his interests. Because of his records, many genealogy records and news clippings survived and are being used in this record of the Keeler/Mayberry families. He had a good heart and was a very caring person. Every Christmas he would deliver food to the poor. After arriving home from those trips, it was difficult to enjoy his own Christmas because of his heavy heart. Sandy has fond memories of her grandfather Keeler and I feel as though I know him as well through his letters and meticulous records. |
