In 1889, at age 40, James moved his family from his father's farm in Kreamer, Pa. to Freeport, Illinois. In 1893, four years later, they moved to Johnstown, Pa. where he spent the rest of his life. At 50 years old, James was a widower and still had the responsibility of raising minor children. George was 18; Anna 15; Eli 13; and Ellen 11. John Wesley 26; William W. 25; Jenny 23; and J. Frank 21; were probably also living at home. The only married child was Emma Catherine, 28, wife of John F. Paul. He later married Amanda Wittenmyre, from Middleburg, the area in which he had been raised. Did he know her from school days? How did they keep in contact from such a distance? At age 64, he again lost a wife and was alone. Later he married Phoebe Bruner-Bopp. He died in 1930, at age 81 and she survived him. Cemetery records list the following: Interment Number #192231, Section ED1, Lot #88, Page 46, Sq. Footage - 192, Price $29. Place of birth - Freeburg, Pa. Obituary reads - JAMES ROBERT KEELER, passed away at his home, 657 Coleman Ave., between 12 and 1 o'clock this morning, in his 82nd year. His death was due to complication of diseases, including hardening of the arteries. His condition became critical a fortnight or so ago. The body has been removed to the home of his son, John W. Keeler, of 760 Grove Ave., the funeral services to held in the Evangelical Church on Ohio St. at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon by the Rev. Emerson L Nicely, with interment in Grandview Cemetery. James Keeler was born near Kreamer, Snyder County, January 10, 1849, a son of Eli and Matilda Bickle Keeler. His father died about 25 years ago at the age of 86, his mother passed away in 1895. Mr. Keeler is survived by a brother, William Keeler, residing in Snyder County. A brother and three sisters preceded him to the grave: Wesley and Olive Keeler, Mrs. Anna Fatied, and Misses Catherine and Emma Keeler. James Keeler attended the township schools near Kreamer for some years and later worked on his father's farm, his parent having been engaged in business for a long time as a huckster along the Pennsylvania Canal, east of the Alleghenies. He came to Johnstown in 1893 to work in the Lorain Steel Company's foundry. Later he secured employment in the plant of the National Radiator Co., Moxham, and worked there until he was made janitor of the Park Ave. schools about 18 years ago. He retired about seven years ago. Many years ago Mr. Keeler was confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Snyder County, but soon after he came here he united with the Moxham United Evangelical Church., which he helped establish in that district. At one time he was a member of the Official Board of the Moxham congregation and served as an officer of the Sunday School for many years. Mr. Keeler was one of the charter members of James A. Garfield Council, Jr. O.U.A.M., and served as Councilor some years later. The deceased was married three times, the first in May 1870, to Miss Sarah Walter, Freeburg, Pa. , the ceremony having been performed by a Lutheran minister. Sometime after her death he married Amanda Wittenmyre, of Middleburg, who passed away in December 1913. Since her death he married Phoebe Bruner-Bopp, who survives him. Ten children were born to the first union, as follows: Catherine, wife of John P. Paul, of 617 Oak St.; John W. Keeler, of 760 Grove Ave.; Wesley W. Keeler, of Washington, D.C.; Jennie wife of M. L. Christ Keeler, of Philadelphia; Ella, wife of Harry Crotzer, of Rockford, Ill.; Eva, another daughter, died in Moxham about 1894, aged two years. The Rev. J. Frank Keeler is a member of the M.E. denomination, and is engaged in the Y.M.C.A. work in Philadelphia. In addition to his children, the deceased is survived by 38 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren, and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Melba Anyde, of New Kensington. One of the deceased's grandsons, the Rev. Robert J. Keeler, is pastor of the Lutheran Church at Kenmore, New York. |
