Mr. Homan:- How nice to find another cousin I didn't know I had. I'm afraid, afterlooking at all the info you have accumulated on the family, that thereisn't much I can add, other than it was said in my family that evidentlyNancy Ann Hodges was reasonably ' 'well off' '. At some time after she andPhilander were married he had her declared, either incompetent or insane, and took over her financial affairs. I don't believe that he was afinancial wizard, because in later years, his daughter and my grandmotherHarriet loaned him money, paid the taxes on his property and finallybought the property from him and surprisingly Nancy Ann. I haven't foundany records as to the death dates of Philander or Nancy Ann. The lastinfo I found was that they lived at ' 'Salt Creek Valley. LeavenworthCounty, Kansas' '. Poor grandmother Harriet - all four feet eleven inchesof her - was ' 'blessed' ' with a father that she had to provided financialsupport to, a husband, my grandfather Luther, who was a dreamer, alwayslooking for the pot of gold out yonder somewhere, twelve children, fiveof whom survived to adulthood, that she supported and ' 'mothered' ' untilher death. In addition to all that, something happened with her sisterMay's marriage to Mr. Bryant and May was living with the family in thelate 1870's early 1880's in Kansas. After Luther died, Harriet spent hertime going from one of her children to another, ' 'doing for them' '. Theywere pretty well scattered - from New York to Chicago to Kansas to NorthDakota to Texas to California. She would get on a train and travel towhomever need her at that moment. She died long before I was born, but Iwould love to have known her and been able to talk to her. I am working on my Kincaid family tree and have hit some snags with thefamily in Missouri and Kansas in the middle 1800's. The Kincaid familyhas a DNA project started and since the testing has to be done only onmale Kincaids, I persuaded my brother to do the test and I am now waitinganxiously for the results in the hope that it will give me some answersas to where my grandfathers siblings disappeared to. I really admire what you have done because I know what a solitary andtedious job it is to spend the long hours in research. I also know whata thrill it is to find an illusive ancestor and be able to fill anotherbranch on the tree. Thank you so much for the information you haveprovided to me. Sincerely Dolores Kincaid Fallis |
