abandoned family for another woman Joshua Randall appeared on the 1820 Federal Census in Spafford, New York. He lived in Galway and/or Milton (Saratoga) New York until/before 1810 where they may be listed with one of the Angle families; Spafford (Onondaga) New York until 1821; moved to Pompey until about 1830 and after 1830 Sarah is not listed with Joshua, he moved to Ypsilanti, Michigan and she, with her family to (Winnebago) Illinois in 1836. Joshua probably worked on the Hudson River Boats according to Ms.Lundin. This is where she likely met Sarah. She says they cannot be located on the 1810 census there so may have relocated to NY. About 1810 the moved to Spafford, Onanadaga Co.NY and 11 yrs. later to Pompey, nearby. In 1830 Sally was head of household so Joshua had probably died. No death has been found as yet however. There also has been no record of divorce found but there is some evidence left by Emma Gage Phipps that there was a second wife with three children. Harve, b: 1821 in NY who married and had a son and Delavan b: 1824 (also a twin sister who died in infancy) who married and Eliza and they had four sons. Ms. Lundin feels that this information is strengthened by a report of Jo Ann Cuddy of Bristol, TN. She shows a listing for Joshua b: 4 Nov 1782 (son of Peter Randall) m: Sarah and goes on to list the children including the ones already noted additionally; Smith (probably Gabriel), Delevan, Harvey, Hiram, Ruth Amy and Sarah Ann (this is most likely Sarah Bethana), however she did not cite any references. There is also strong evidence that he remarried even a third time as there is a certificate that states he marriage of Joshua Randall age 63 yrs. with Hannah Dingman, age 57 yrs. of Superior, Washtenaw Co. on the 7 Jan 1846. ( It would certainly appear to me that perhaps he and Sarah did indeed divorce as she didn't die until 1865 and would certainly have been alive at the time of this marriage.) Ms. Lundin further states that this may not be the former husband of Sarah however the age and residence of his son and daughter, Gabriel and Arminda is shown and they are indeed his children by Sarah. |
