Gravestone Marker. ' 'Here Lyes Interred the Body of Lieut. Jeremiah Ripley Husband to Mrs. Mary Ripley who fell asleep in Jesus March the 10th 1736-7 in the 75th year of his Age.' ' Jeremiah RIPLEY, Lieutenant:Notes:Jeremiah Ripley was a Lieutenant in King Philip's War. On this basis, in 1735, shortly after his death, his son Josiah was given a land grant in Windham, Connecticut.Jeremiah followed the lead of his brother Joshua in the creation of a petition which led to the formation of the town of Windham, Connecticut. See the text of the petition in his brother Joshua's file...The signers to the above petition were the first actual settlers of the plantation and the fathers of the town. They were probably the only resident proprietors at the time. Joshua Ripley, Jeremiah Ripley, Jonathan Ginnings, Thomas Huntington, Jonathan Crane, Joseph Huntington and John Larrabee, were married men with families. Richard Hendee, William Backus, and John Backus, were single, but married soon after. Cates was probably a widower. These with their families then numbered thirty-eight persons; besides there were probably some laborers and domestics. Up to this date there had been, according to the records, but one birth in the settlement, although tradition says two. That was Ebenezer Ginnings, son of Jonathan, who was born February 18th, 1691. These settlers were all located at the South East Quarter, (Windham Centre,) and their ' 'Home Lots) were on the west side of the town street, where the first houses were undoubtedly built. It has not been our purpose to give the particulars of the first settlement at this time, but only a few words of explanation. This petition was continued to the next session of the General Court, (In May 1692) when the prayer of the petitioners was granted and the settlers invested with town privileges. Josiah RIPLEY:Notes:Josiah Ripley received a land grant in Windham in 1735, shortly after his father's death, on the grounds that his father had served in King Philip's War. |
