From the birth of his first daughter, we know John would have been in Rhode Island by April 1729 at the latest, nine months before Sarah's birth. His wedding was only about four months before Sarah's birth. From the available information, John's arrival in Rhode Island must have been between 1726 and April1729.
He was living in the town of New Canaan, Columbia Co., NY in 1778. The town of Canaan, NY, was founded in 1778. John's last child Asa, was born in West Greenwich, RI in May of 1760 and Asa stated in his military records that he was staying at his parent's home in the town of New Canaan, Columbia Co.,NY in 1779. The family must have moved from Rhode Island to New York sometime after June 1775, when John's daughter Jane was married in Warwick, Rhode Island, and before 1777 when Asa first because a militia volunteer in the Revolutionary War at about age of 17. Asa stated in his military pension records in the National Archives that one of his mess mates was his brother Preserved. The oldest child, Sarah, would have been about 35 years old if they moved in 1774, so it is possible that some of the older children remained in Rhode Island.
