1850 - Laona, Winnebago, Illinois with parents 1860 - Howard, Winnebago, Illinois with son Abert and his step-father Edward VanSycle, Edward and Eliza never marry Howard Township became Durand Township in 1856. ' 'The death of Eliza S. Boyd, wife of Phillip Boyd, occurred last Thursday, Feb. 4, 1904, her age being 71 years and 9 days. She was born in Spafford, Onondaga county, N. Y. in 1833. She leaves a husband and three children to mourn her loss. One girl, Belle, died some years ago. There are left, also, three brothers--E.D. and -- Ripley, of Rockford, Ill. and Charles Ripley, of Durand, Ill. A son, Albert Boyd, attended the funeral from Durand, Ill. The servicees were held Sunday at the Methodist church, Bassett, conducted by Rev. C. C. Casper and the interment was in the Deerfield cemetery. Mrs. Boyd had for many years been a resident of Basett [sic] [and] was one of its most prominent woman [sic]. She took much interest in public and charitable works, being up to her death a member of the W. R. C. Her departure is mourned by relatives and old friends alike.' ' Obituaries and Death Notices [from the] Nashua Reporter, January-March 1904.' ' Chickasaw County, Iowa, -- In a letter to Eliza on 28 Apr 1857 from her sister, Martha, who lives in Bluffton, Winneshiek, IA (wasn't if Fred Caldwell b in Winneshiek Co IA?) wrote this: "Eliza, your Mr. Foster has been here and made us a visit and staid all night..... And I am quite certain by fall you will have plenty of money to come out here with by that time. I want, if you come, to be here by the midle of Oct and if you intend to come don't disapoint me. I presume you will have company then, for Father wrote that he should call on me next fall, and if he does mother must come along." To Dud Ripley Jun 22, 1857 ''I am glad to hear that Eliza was getting better, but you did not tell me whether Father was getting better or worse..... Tell Eliza that if she is well enough, to come right straight along with Foster out here. '' The next letter is dated Feb 1859, no mention of Eliza. In a letter on Nov 7, 1859 Martha mentions that in Sep of 1859 Eliza is living at the Beeches, one of Durand's two hotels, The Beach House. Martha went back to Ilinois to visit in 1860. She died there on 18 Mar 1860. Martha was m to Clark Fletcher. He stayed in Bluffton and remarried. --- There are only three male Fosters that live near Eliza in 1857 that are over the age of 12, Horatio (abt 1837 Maine), his brother Reuben (abt 1839 Maine ), and George( abt 1822 Canada ) Foster, both of Owen, Winnebago, IL. It appears that one of these men may have been dating Eliza. I am checking records to see if one may have died or simply moved on. Rueben moved to MN by 1860 and married 2 Apr 1861. Horatio married 20 Jul 1855 so he would not have been dating in 1857. He also moved to MN. George appears to have died. There are numerous George Fosters of about the same age, all born in Canada but later census all show when they came to America. There are no census records for this George other than the 1850 Winn. IL census when he lives in Harrison, Winnebago, Illinois. It appears he is dead by 1860. I suspect he is dead by late 1857 which is when Eliza meets David Perry. Could George Foster actually be the father of Albert? Yes, I believe it's possible but unlikely. The above letters would indicate that George was in Iowa when Albert was concieved plus Eliza names her son ''Perry''. As it appears Eliza (and possibly George) had been saving money to move to Iowa, I believe it is no conscience that after Philip marries Eliza and they move to Iowa. (The George foster that moved to Amsterdam, Hancock, Iowa has a son born about 1868 in Canada so we can also rule him out.) We do know that George Foster was in Iowa in 1857. So, when were the letters written and why were they an important find? Albert was born 7 Aug 1858, Albert should have been conceived around early Nov 1857. Letters April and Jun 1857 showing Foster in Iowa. Unless he (Foster) came back to IL, he can not be Alberts father. Letters make it sound as if Foster has moved to Iowa and is saving money so Eliza can join him. If money is tight, it would not make sense that he would spend what little they had to travel back and forth to Iowa. --- update 7/26/20006: In 1880, there is a George Foster (occur. farmer) living in a boarding house in Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa, single He was born in Canada....he marked both his parents as Inuit's. Do you suppose he never went back to IL for Eliza?....maybe because he found out that Eliza had become pregnant and he knew he could not be the father as he had been in Iowa when she became pregnant? This boarding house looks like it's for single men that all work for other people. It must be a REALLY large boarding house as it takes more than 1 page to list all the borders. |
