Notes
![]() Note |
In 1840, James Ripley and his family were enumerated in the U.S. census for Laona Township in Winnebago County, IL. His household consisted of five males, one under 5 years (Charles P.), one aged 5-10 years (William E.), two aged 10-15 years (James P., Jonathan), and one aged 30-40 years (probably James himself, who was about 43 at the time); and five females, two girls aged 5-10 (Martha A., Eliza S.), one girl aged 10-15 (Tryphena), one aged 15-20 (Lodema)and one aged 30-40 years (probably Mahala, who was about 35 at the time). Living nearby in Laona Township in 1840 were the families of three of Mahala's married siblings, William and Sophia Randall, Amos N. and Sarah B. (Randall) Gage and William H. and Ruama (Randall) Stephens. James Ripley purchased 40 acres of federal land in Section 26 (SE 1/4 SW 1/4) of Laona Township on 1 Mar1847. His farm was less than two miles distant from the federal parcels purchased by his brother-in-law, William Randall, in 1844 and 1845. Another of Ripley's brothers-in-law, Amos N. Gage, would buy a farm next to William Randall's farm the following year (in 1848). In 1850, James and Mahala Ripley and nine of their children lived in Laona Township in Winnebago County, IL. Another child, 8-year-old Marina Snow, also lived with the Ripleys. (A Ripley genealogy includes two older children who were out of the Ripley household by 1850, one of them a daughter, Lodema (b 1823) who died 4 Sep 1841, approximately the time young Marina had been born. Marina Snow could possibly have been a motherless Ripley grandchild.) |
