DAYTON BOY'S HEROISM TO
SAVE DROWNING BROTHER
Roy Howard, 8 Years Old, Victim of
Sad Mill Pond Accident.
Roy Howard, 8-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Howard, of Dayton, was drowned on Thanksgiving day while sliding on the ice on the mill pond back of his home. He went through the thin ice into five feet of water. Avin Howard, an older brother, aged 14, saw him when he went down and ran at once to his assistance. Without hesitation he jumped into the water and grabbed his little brother, succeeding in getting him back to firm ice but was unable to get either himself or his brother out of the water, although he managed to hold the little fellow above water for some time.
Neighbors who saw the accident ran as fast as possible with ropes and ladders, but before they arrived the bigger boy became so numb and chilled by the cold water that he lost his hold of the little one who soon sank to rise no more in life.
The body was soon recovered but too late to be of any avail. |
