WWI Draft Reg as Ralph Walter Ludow
Ralph served 23 years in the national guard: 7 years in the Wisconsin guard and 16 years in the Illinois guard. He served on the Mexican border in 1916, also in WW I from 1918 to 1919 and during part of WW II he organized and trained, in Sterling, Company B of the Third Illinois R.M. He retired as a Major of Infantry.
In 1950, perhaps even earlier, he and his wife moved to Tuscon, Arizona, for his health. But trouble came from a different direction: on February 16, 1952, after 9 months of illness) his wife, Mae, died (after ~32 years of marriage, no children) of breast cancer. He died 11 days later on February 27. His death certificate states that the cause of death was "secondary tuberculosis -- pubis" and that he also had "chronic severe anemia" and severe splenomegally". Sisters Adele and Frances traveled to Arizona to make the arrangements. The burial urns were deposited in the "Prarie Cemetery" in Fennimore, Wisconsin , possibly the place of her birth/childhood.
