FORMER MINISTER OF GOSPEL PASSES AWAY James J. Walter Funeral services for James J. Walter, 830 Haight street, who died at 6:30 Wednesday morning, will be held at Byrnes' parlor, 901 Williams avenue, at 10 o'clock Friday morning, in charge oof the G. A. R. post. Dr. W. T. Kerr, a lifelong friend, will officiate. Mr. Walter came to Oregon in 1895 from Illinois, where he was chaplain of the Joliet penitentiary. He was pastor of the Astoria M. E. church two years, and in 1897 took charge of the Centenary Methodist church in Portland, where he stayed until 1899, when he took charge of missions in Alaska.In 1902 he went to Spokane for eight months, and in 1904 returned to Portland and engaged in the grocery business.
