[keaglebunch.FTW] Wilber E. Keagle, who is carrying on a profitable business in Davis as a blacksmith and a dealer in farm machinery and implements, is one of Stephenson county's native sons, his birth having occurred in Rock Run township, May 11, 1873. His father Joseph S. Keagle, was born in Lycoming county, Pennsylvania, and was about twelve years of age when brought west to Illinois by his parents. The rest of his life was spent in this state, his active years being devoted to his trade as a carpenter and joiner and to farming. He died in Davis on October, 1909 at the age of seventy-two years. His wife who was Miss Lucinda V. Boyden in her maidenhood, was a native of Rock Run township, this county, and died in Rock City in 1902. Their family were four children, three of whom are living namely, George Harrison, who is a blacksmith, engaged in business for himself in Collins, Iowa; Wilber E., of thsi review; Fred W., a partner of Wilber, who is also a travelling machine expert in the employ of the International Harverster Company of America. When of suitable age Wilber E. Keagle, became a pupil in the public school of Rock City, wherein he aquired training in the fundamental branches of English education. Through the summer months he worked for his father on the farm, remaining at home until he reached the age of twenty years, when he started to make his own way in the world. For one year he was a travelling salesman, and then at the age of twenty-one, he established himself in business in Davis. At first he had a blacksmith, machine and carpenter shop, and later, as he met with success, he added a line of farm implements. Through perserverance, industry and adherence to high standards of business probity he has built up a large trade and has been able to enlarge his stock until now he has a fine line of farm implements, seperators, engines, carriages and other articles that find a ready sale in a farming community. In Dakota, Illinois, on March 25, 1896, Mr. Keagle, was united in the bonds of wedlock to Miss Marie Meier, a daughter of Henry Meier, a well known farmer in Rock Run township. Four children have been born to them; Enita, Cecil, Lila and Wayne, the oldest being twelve years of age. Since he has been of an age to exercise his right of franchise Mr. Keagle, has always been stalwart in support of the principles of the republican party, having the greatest faith in their value for good government. While his is not an aspirant for official preferment he has served in public acceptably as justice of the peace, his decisions being ever based upon equity and justice. His religious faith is manifest in his membership in the Methodist Episcopal church of Davis. He has many friends in Rock Run township, where his entire life has been passed, and it is an indication of the uprightness of his life that those who have known him longest are most loyal in his support. {SOURCE: History of Stephenson County, Illinois, Volume II} |
