Gottfried Zillmer was born in Kreis Pyritz, Pommern, in 1814. About 1834 he married Hannah Charlotte Butt of Brallentin born in 1809, the daughter of Christopher (Dec 1768-24 Dec 1846) and Anna Sophia (Bucholz) Butt (18 Jan 1766- 18 April 1849). They had four children. Wilhelm Frederich born October 3, 1835; Auguste Louise born April 18, 1838; August Friedrich born January 23, 1841in Repplin; and Hannah Wilhelmine born September 19, 1845 in Doelitz. On April 14th, 1854, Gottfried, Hannah or ' 'Lottie' ' his wife, and four children arrived in America on the Countess of London, which sailed from Hamburg, Germany, and landed in Quebec. They settled in Jefferson County on the county line between Watertown and Lebanon. They became members of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, where son August was confirmed in 1855. Gottfried worked here as a farm laborer. On the 27th of October, 1856 he signed his intention to become a citizen in the Green County County Court House of Monroe, and in the spring of 1858 moved his family to Green County, WIsconsin, near Monroe. He rented a farm next to the William Sutherland Farm and his personal worth listed in the 1860 Federal Census was $400. Hannah Butt aged 14, who was probably Lottie's neice lived with them at that time and was listed as household help on the census. On the 25th of August, 1861, after being in America only seven years, he died at his home on the farm in Sylvester Township and was buried in the plot purchased by his son-in-law Antone Miller, in Greenwood Cemetery. The gravestone is broken at the bottom and his name is spelled as G. Gelmer.Lottie lived eight years more, most probably with her daughter Augusta, who had married Antone Miller, and died 26 September 1869 at the age of 62. Her grave was marked with a lovely headstone and she is buried beside Gottfried in Greenwood Cemetery. |
