He was in the carpentry business for 62 years. His big moment came in 1907 when he invented and patented a mechanical filing device which today (1955) has come into wide use. The first home he helped build was in Kansas in 1886. Since that time he has constructed over seventy five houses in Brodhead and vicinity, not including additions, barns, and other buildings. He worked on the construction of every church in Brodhead except one. In the city's business district he built the former Fuller Furniture building, now occupied by the Gamble Store. The Green County Bank building and the Riese Building. Everything he learned in the contracting business was the result of his own ingenuity. He had no formal training in drafting plans.
